Published

I was recently accepted into a CNL program over Christamas and I havent been able to contact any advisors at the school since it was the holiday. I would LOVE to get some input for CNLs I'm in desperate need of advice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What's a CNL???? I've not heard of this.

a CNL is a clinical nurse leader its a MSN degree program

The school may not open up till tomorrow that why you can't get in touch with them....... Where are you going?

Yea, I know they dont open back up untill the 4th. University of Maryland is the school Im interested in.

Thought so..... Thats where I go now.... I going into my second semester of the BSN program.... They are very unorganized, but don't let that turn you away, the school is awesome and I am happy I went there and I couldn't imagine myself anywhere else.... I am not a CNL, but I can tell you what I know from what I seen.... The CNL is pretty new and they are still trying to figure things out.... I have seen some unfair things on the CNLs behalf in my opinion, but all the CNL's I know still know love it...... let me know if you have any questions..... I'll actually be at the school on Tuesday

Also, many people may not know what a CNL is..... I think it is pretty isolated to Maryland

Nope, they have them in IL too. Here, the CNL program is an MSN degree but not an advanced practice nurse. They mostly do more of the case management type of duties.

We've got TONS of CNL programs out here in California. The VA is really big on hiring them. There was another thread somewhere on here saying that some CNS's were getting replaced by CNL's. Since this is a generalist MSN, CNL's don't get paid much more than a BSN...way less than the CNS salary.

It's a very new emerging role that hasn't been integrated into a lot of hospital systems yet.

Wow I was wrong...... I just know that many people outside of UMB have never heard of it when I mentioned it..... My apologies

It's a bit of a read, but the "White Paper on the Role of the Clinical Nurse Leader" gives a very clear outline of the CNL role. Tremendously helpful if you're starting a CNL program (I'm starting one in February). While the CNL role has been very clearly defined academically, it has yet to be really integrated into hospital systems yet. I think there's still a lot of uncertainty and suspicion around yet ANOTHER type of nurse, but it makes a lot of sense to me for my personal career goals.

It will be interesting to see how the CNL position develops.
