When are you going to get your NP?

Dear Lord I can't escape the "When are you going to be a......" if I tried!!

As an LPN, let me tell you, I have heard for YEARS the question of when I am going to get my RN (when I damn well please). And now, here I am, 18 months from graduation if all goes as planned. Devoted my whole life to school (I am happy I did it though), lost 30 lbs because I am so stressed I can hardly eat, and one of my relatives asked tonight:

"So, when are you going to get your NP????"

Never lady never. She looked perplexed :sniff:

Am I going to be asked this the rest of my life? Please tell me no.

I never want to be an NP, ever. Kudos to you all you NPs out there but I just wanna be a BSN and only that because it's required in the hospitals, otherwise I would be just fine with an associates . Why is this the new "Well your an LPN but what else are ya gonna be" thing?? I even get it from co-workers. Like I am an underachiever because I am content with Jane Doe, RN. I shouldn't care but I hear it all the time now.

I too, heard it as an LPN. It was very annoying and made all my hardwork seem worthless. I did get my RN and thought I wouldn't hear those things anymore. Nope. Now I hear, "When are you going to get your BSN?" I am pursuing my BSN, but for my own personal growth. I hope not to hear it when I'm done with my BSN. I don't have any desire to go any further than that. Do what is best for you. Who cares what others say. Because the are your goals and no one else's.

I don't think you ever escape that "when are you going to--------?" question. I wish I could be more optimistic and tell you it will taper off at some point . . . and even if you tell yourself it's silly to care about people and their busybody questions they only get slightly less annoying as you advance your career.

I have learned to become more self-directed and gain my sense of personal value from myself and the people who genuinely care about me.

If I may say so, congrats on your persistence and dedication in turning your goals into reality!

Oh my, this just reminded me of earlier this semester when I was in clinical with my instructor (MSN) and an old coworker of hers asked her when she was going back for her doctorates. I didn't think about it in that way until I looked at this post. So, I guess I better prepare myself for those questions for the rest of my career.

I've got my BSN , had it for 10 years, planning on an MSN start this year, maybe (management/leadership). I work LTC, because I love it. I always get asked why I'm working in LTC instead of hospital, plus the NP question. And former coworkers from hospitals do make condescending comments about my chosen specialty. So what? I also have a Master's from a well known university for computer science (programming). So I'm not ignorant or unmotivated. Just not interested in what everyone else is. Congrats on pursuing and completing your BSN. Do the things with your career that make you happy. Everyone else can mind their own. If they did just that, they would stay plenty busy!

I might be interested in pursing some kind of management degree, but at this point I don't know if that'd be a CNL with a focus on admin or an MHA. But NP? No thanks. People always suggest it (You could go get your NP...), and I think, "WHY?!" So I just tell them if I'd wanted to practice medicine, I'd have majored in biology and gone to medical school!

You should kindly say "I'll further my education when I feel like I want to". Short and sweet :smug:
