What to do during summer break...

What do most nursing students do during the summer before starting the last year? Externship? Work? I go to school in a small town and there are only two hospitals, I'd like to get some clinical experience in a bigger city.

My sister worked as an aide in a nursing home throughout her last year/summer prior to. I am fortunate enough to already have a position at a local children's hospital.

Extern would be what I'd suggest however it's pretty late to be thinking about applying for that position this summer. So doing PCT work is your next best bet IMO.

I think it is up to you and what is best in your situation. I think externships are good experience but not necessary. I am going into my final year and I plan to work in a field outside of nursing that I enjoy. If you're after clinical experience in a bigger city, I would look into jobs as a CNA/PCT, what ever it is called in your area, in one of those cities.

Enjoy it!! My school has trimesters and I'm working full time so my clinicals are on Saturdays and so not only do I not have a summer, I don't have any weekends. So whatever you decide to do, don't forget to take some time to enjoy yourself and allow your brain to recharge.

I have a few classmates who have to take some non-nursing classes, so they piled them up during the summer. I'm just sticking to working though
