What would you say?

I would begin by explaining how to evaluate where their weaknesses are, such as reading, science, math, for entrance exams to college and where to get help. Don't know if being too honest about nursing would be wise, but let them know that it is nothing like what is seen on television. I would let them know that most programs are competitive and that nursing has to be taken seriously.

First of all, I'd tell them that nurses are needed very badly, esp with the baby boomer generation coming of age. Secondly, I'd tell them that they should consider nursing if they care about people and want to help....NOT for the money. It takes a lot of compassion and dedication to get through nursing school. You either have it or you don't. I just hate to see people in it for the money. To me, it's very fulfulling to drive home from work each morning knowing I've made a difference in someone's life.

i'm not sure about that.

i mean really, i think i would have liked to know the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

i honestly don't know if i would have chosen nsg, if i knew what i now know.

and if fewer join the ranks as a result of being forewarned, 'maybe' there'd be more focus on retention rather than recruiting.

The reason why I would sort of tame down the honesty is because it defeats the purpose of coming there to begin with. I think that blunt, raw honesty is better served with a one to one session with people. I think that speaking to a crowd of people should be a bit generic, but let them know that the application process to a nursing program is no walk in the park.
