What do we learn in Micro?

Published

I had micro 1 and 2 years ago. this school only has one micro class. I'm wondering if it is the two classes I took in one or what. From what i remember in micro 1 we learned about diseases and the immune system there was no lab(i think?) in micro 2 we learned about many strains of bacteria and we did a lot of growing. we also had an unknown at the end of the semester that we had to figure out.

I suggest reading the course description for your school or contacting the instructor for a syllabus.

We really have no idea what is taught at your school.

I did not get the inpression you wanted people to tell you about what your school teaches, just what people learned during their micro class.

Basically, I learned about bacteria. How viral replication. How that avoid being detected by the immune system. We looked under the microscope a ton, lol.

We learned about malaria, polio, genus and species of things. Binomial nomenclature. About key people that were important to microbiology. Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes. Antibodies and antigens. Lyme disease was covered as well.

We got to type our own blood and look at it under the scope. We viewed different types of blood cells. That is some of what I can recall. I would have to get my notes to tell you more.

We learned about bacteria and viruses, as well as how an epidemic can occur. In the lab, we learned how to observe various types of Gram negative and positive bacteria. We also observed bacteriophages creating areas of clear (cannot remember the name of it). I absolutely loved microbiology. It requires a lab and I would recommend you do it. :)

I'm an ER nurse. Please let me tell u, in retrospect micro was insanely useful!!!

The most pertinent things were learning about lipopolysaccharide- an endo toxin from lysed gram negative bacteria. I have now witnessed TWO codes attributed to that!!!

In addition.... Ok... I've imbibed a bit much.... I don't remember rt now. But no joke!!! That class was so useful, but I think it was bc I was an LPN when I took it and already understood how to relate it patient care.

we learned about gram negative, gram positive bacteria....like streptococcus, staphlycoccus, clostridium, cornyebacteria, etc etc. my teacher had been doing micro his whole life and made us learn so much bacteria uggggh my head hurts just thinking about it!! but its a fun class, :)

Micro is great, though its a lot to learn in a short time. Like others have said, you cover bacteria, viruses, parasitic worms, and antimicrobial agents used to treat them.

You spend lots of time using the microscope, and identifying unknown bacteria. My teacher was fun and assigned up a bacteria that we had to write a personal ad for ("looking for love and hosts to infect").

I did it as a blended class with lecture and tests online and the lab portion in the classroom. Think I would have learned more if I'd taken the whole class in person. Good luck.

Specializes in IMCU, Oncology.

In addition to what others mentioned prokaryotic, eukaryotic cell structure, metabolism and genetics.

Just got my book! looks like it is like my micro 1 course which wasn't so bad. It was one of my favorite courses! Micro 2 was booooorrrrrriiiiiinnnnggg! lol! we learned a lot of individual bacterium in that class yawn!!
