What happens if you fail????

Published

What happens if you fail out of a nursing school course? I see posts on here in which this has happened to people, but what do you do? You get kicked out and then you reapply all brand new to the program or do you get to try again the next semester no matter what?

Also........for those of you that got pregnant in nursing school or had to take a break for a different reason....how does that work? Do you tell them you need a semester off and that is it or what?

Just curious. :)

it depends on you school and the nursing program's policies. the college i attend for the adn program is pretty strict when it comes to failing. one we fail 2 courses, we are kicked out of the nursing preogam and can not reapply for 3 years!!!!! it desn't matter if i was to fail one course in my 1st semester and then the 2nd in the 4th semester, they would still kick me out of the program.

now, when it comes to medical issues, they need documentaion stating that we can not participate in clinical at that time, and then we could go back at the begining of the next semester once we are released from the doctor. of course, this depends on what the medical issue is. for pregnancy, they would let us back the semester after we had the baby. however, if we wanted to continue with clinical while being preganat we are allowed, as long as the prenatal doctor signs a consent that we are physically capable of participating. there was this woman in clinical about a year ago, who went through the enitr semester while being pregnant. when she had her baby, she missed 2 days and was back to class the third day. i personally could not do that.

if it was something like a back problem, then like i said we would need to have another physical done, as well as, a consent form stating that the doctor feels we are able to return. as far as personal issues go, i don't know.

i am going to be starting my 1st semester of clinical in aug. i am soooo nervous. i think my biggest fear is failing out of the nursing program. it wouldn't scare me as much if we didn't have to wait 3 years before we could reapply. reapply doesn't mean we are automatically in, either. even if accepted we would still have to go on the waiting list, which for some people is up to 2 years. for some of the students who applied and was accepted into the nursing program at the same time as me, have to wait until spring of 2007 before they can start their clinical. it all depends on who has the highest rank(your score off the nln exam if you passed or if you didn't pass, your gpa + grades from certain prereqs).

if i was you, i would ask for a copy of the policies and procedures for clinical. that way you have the book to refer back to. good luck!! :)

In our program, you can retake the failing semester when it's next offered, and if they can accommodate you, space-wise (assuming you didn't burn any bridges or do anything truly idiotic). Ditto with taking a leave of absence, although I think with a leave they will give you priority. Every semester it seems we lose a few students and gain a few students for various reasons.

In my school if you fail, you can take the semester over again. You're allowed academic leave and personal leave although I'm not entirely sure if it is one or two of each.

I *think* the way it works at my school is that you have to wait a calendar year to get back in if you fail. But if you fail again, you're out for good.

I had a classmate who was pregnant in the fall semester--delivered right after exams. She told me she was taking a semester off and then plans to reenter in the fall of this year. She was in good academic standing and I bet that counted.

in my school if you "fail out" which really means if you get a C or below in any of your nursing courses and/or if your GPA drops below 3.0..this includes if you have a 3.0 but you got a C in one of your direct nursing related courses, you are OUT! no retaking no nothin...see ya later...oh and no refunds either, even if you choose to leave in the middle of the semester...ie pregnancy...

wow!!! is it for an adn, bsn, or msn? that is more strict then the college i go to. truthfully, they really should not be allowed to kick you out of nursing courses for good if you are only pregnant. the most they should be allowed to do is, not allow you to come back until after the birth. now, as far as, refunds,... my college is the same way. they won't give back a cent!!

does your nursing school have a low completion rate, considering a c is failing there?

good luck!! :)

In my school in central jersey, you can fail 2 times and then your out for good. And the other local schools will not accept you into their program if you failed out of another nursing program. I know of a couple of my classmates that failed 1st semester and last semester and can't get into another program. Basically 2.5 years for nothing. Such ashame.

You're out with a "C"? I wonder what the point of having the letter grades of C and D, then, since essentially, they're really all "F"s!

I'm in a direct entry MSN and also with us, nothing below a b- is acceptable. Bs and above only are accepted.

I failed my first semester by 2 points and my community college doesn't give you a second chance to start over. This is really ridiculous...but that's okay. This experience has given me more drive and perserverance in my career goals of becoming a registered nurse and eventually a neonatal nurse practitioner. I am now applying to 4 yr. universities that do give you a second and even third chance to pass nursing 1. I wasn't accepted to any schools for Fall 2005....so I have to wait an entire year to be accepted into a nursing program.

See, I'm pregnant now. Baby's due about a month after graduation. I havn't been asked to sign any consent form or release form or have my OB sign anything yet. Here, its just a matter of can you handle it, know what classes to schedule when so you can do it, and let people know so its not a suprise on them. Like, I have my last med/surg and community health to do in the fall. These are taken back to back. I was supposed to take community first but now that I'm preggos I will try and switch to med/surg first so I can get the heavy clinical out of the way first.
