What to bring when migrating?

A few things to be aware of:

Not all cell phones used at home can be used here. And not all phone companies here offer SIM cards for the phone.

Make sure that any books that you bring, are not copied versions.

Definitely bring any legal documents that you have, such as marriage license, birth certificates, etc. And carry those on the plane with you, do not put in your luggage.

Where in the US are you going to be working?

Thanks Suzanne. My destination will be California. I'll be bringing along my laptop, but I do have my reservations of bringing a lot of things because of the new airport guidelines. :) Documents indeed will be handcarried.

Bring all important docs, money, good clothing for summer (if arriving on summer) and for winter (if arriving on winter), important telephone numbers such as your employer, your relatives, etc, memories of the past (pictures), medications for 2 weeks (check-in luggage), small electronic items such as digital camera, moving camera, laptop, and other things of personal importance to you.

Do not bring a lot of clothings. Just bring enough to survive for two weeks. You may want to buy brand new skirts, jackets, shirts and pants that are "in" in the place where you will be living.

Do not bring your TV and Refrigerator. You know what I mean.

Oh by the way, surf the internet and survey the area where you will be living and working.....look for the nearest church, school, supermarket.....look for the bus routes....try Mapquest....(it will not help you much though)......and get their phone numbers....

I too am migrating with my family soon.I have already packed my suitcases and boxes with clothes,books(original),photos, and even toys.I am quite unsure if it's alright to bring my homade family videos starting when my husband and I got married up to the most recent family activity.I am also a movie addict.That's why I also packed my original vcds and dvds.I retained them in their cases.Of course,I will handcarry important documents that will be needed at the departure area and port of entry.And yes, I won't forget our pocket money.:nuke:

I don't think home videos will cause you trouble. Just properly mark them with the events. For original videos, make sure that they are not too many to cause you to pay taxes (am not sure about this).

I have a question: Is there anybody here with experience in bringing their pets? Pls. share.

First of all you are planning to take videos do you mean the old style vhs vidioes not dvds because uk videos do not work in the usa, they are a different size and format.

As for the taxes I called the immigration Tax people and the guy was really helpful he said to put a covering note with the boxes your moving explaining its all PERSONAL goods for moving and you pay no tax on personal items. I specifically asked about the dvds and ornaments and computers we were bringing and all the same no tax on pesonal items.

Now for the pets Im not sure from the phillipeans but from uk my dogs needed their pet passports, rabies vacinations, and micro chip to move.

id rather have documents on fedex or something. bring the fewest items on carry-on. just a passport and travel documents if possible. if your riding the pal plane on economy, omg, be prepared bec unlike before they had only one movie on the entire 14 hour trip!!! bring a book or something. if your taking that flight (leaves 10pm), try not to sleep the whole flight so when you get here (pm too) youll be adjusted already.

some of the things here i brought and some are the things i felt i didnt need but wish now i have. trivial. but you know, theres no place like home. even if its availble here, its still cheaper to buy stuff there.

bring personal hygiene stuff. if you love marks and spencer, bring your stash of toiletries here bec they dont have it here. vaseline shampoo. scented candles. id bring my own cotton buds bec i dont like the ones here. if you have a house here, buy placemats from sm, bec its about $4 a piece here. also get their thick pajamas there, which you can use in a month or two. underwear - undershirt, panties, socks. pinoy cook books. you can also bring those thick bagiou market blankets. if you buy a vaccum watchamakalit in sm, you can flatten them so it wont be bulky. its like a big plastic case that you can put stuff in and then take the air out to flatten it. slippers. a tote bag. bag labels from bag tag.

btw, eat in all the great restos there before you come here. would i love to sink my teeth in some dencios sisig, fish & co fish and chips, cibo pasta, bizu desserts, adobo flakes and bibinka with queso de bola from via mare, and lengua from cocina ni tita moning. youll need time to adjust the pinoy panlasa.

go to the spa and get a massage(s)!!!! do it or youll regret it.
