So this week I went back to work at my previous place of employment after being gone for just a little over a year. Today was my first day back on "my" wing, the wing where I had worked much of the 5 years that I had been employed there the first time. And I had been happy to see that my favorite resident was still alive and well. Well when I walked into her room this morning to give her her meds I said "Good morning Trouble!", she took one look at me and exclaimed "well hello Stranger!!! Where have you been?!" I asked her if she remembered me and she said "of course I remember you! I've missed you!" She's a resident that is A&O but does have some forgetfulness and on occasion does get confused (she's scanned the parking lot for her parent's car on more than one occasion), so it definitely made my day that she remembered me!

That is such a great feeling. A few years ago I had taken a few months off from work and my first night back one resident saw me and said "Where the heck have you been?" She couldn't remember my name/title but she sure knew I had been among the missing!

Sometimes the biggest joys, come from the most unexpected places.
You must have been important to your resident, for your memory to span a year, and the fog of dementia.
I think that's what I miss the most about LTC. The bond you form with people you care for, month after month and year after year.

That connection with the people I care for is the reason I stay in LTC. It sure isn't the pay, lol!
