Wake Tech Spring 2017 Start

Hey KALA! I believe it has to be either or. Any applications submitted after January 2017 will need to be 200 paid hours. Whew right, I know! There's nursing home here at Rex where I work. I'm also debating if I would like to transfer over to the CNA role now from phlebotomist. Don't want to jump the gun just yet, but I'd like to still work while in school and would more then likely have to work at night as a CNA. Are you done with pre-reqs yet?

I think you're right -- it can be paid or volunteer this year.

I've applied for some hospital PRN jobs but I don't know how easy those are to get without experience. That's why I was thinking volunteering might be a good option, because I don't know if I want to work at a LTC facility (and those don't seem to have a lot of PRN positions). JPeters, do you like the nursing home where you work?

I'm finishing up two prerequisites this semester, but I still have 2 others I haven't done (sociology and developmental psych). I need to meet with an advisor to find out if I need to fit one of those in this summer. It sounds like 150-160 points are the goal?

Look at per diem or prn spots at UNC hospital! They hire people with no experience. I got hired there right after I passed my CNA exam. I know right now we are hiring per diem/prn on my unit, and i know there are other units too.

I applied to several PRN positions at UNC!! That's great to hear, I'm definitely hoping I'll hear something back from them. Mind if I ask what unit you're in?

Wow, I would LOVE to work on that floor! I applied to surgical actue care - 5 Anderson job. Is that the same thing?

It's on the same floor but a different unit (that place is huge!) I believe 5AND does vascular surgery and something else. I can't remember. They're actually down the hall a bit from us! 5East and the BICU are between us.

Finally convinced myself to sign up for the CNA exam... my last step before turning in an application in July. Fingers crossed I pass in May!!

Hello 2bRN919, If you took the class, I truly believe you'll do just fine. I watched you tube videos OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER and the night before performed a number of realistic skills on the hubby, which by the way never got, and all went well. I believe confidence and talking to the client as if they were real and even your human partner that you'll be paired with will stand out. 2 people ran out of time and not sure of the errors with the other students. The written I was able to find online (sample quizzes) and found that it was ALOT similar to the actual test. Please watch R Myer CNA skills, I believe she shows you 22. I didn't practice until the day before with a real person. Being confident allows you to move swiftly. I also was the second with my partner to began, so I laid down as the client as was able to get my barons together. I also watched her mess up a lot of things which MADE me want to make sure I knew what to do. We had different skills and you wont know until its your turn.

Hey Kala, I work as a phlebotomist at Rex (I'm stationed in the Medical Office Plaza at an OBGYN office) I know sounds confusing. We, however are an outreach lab at Rex, so we placed outside of the hospital for convenience of the patients. Rex also has a nursing home that I plan to ask if I can volunteer. Worst case scenario, I will try to apply to one of the jobs as a CNA, or shadow one of the nurses at the OBGYN office. My next challenge is taking the TEAS, signing up to take it in May. My advisor told me it's not worth my wild trying to retake Eng 111 to remove the C. So thanks for that cause I feel like I've reached the end of my tunnel with all these pre-reqs, I'm so over this pre stage, ready to move on, lol.

RN919 - I second the advice about the YouTube videos. I used those same R Mayer ones as my main method of studying for the test and I passed on the first try. The videos really have everything you need to know. Then you can talk through the skill out loud with yourself, and check your steps with the book. I was nervous about the BP and was really glad I didn't get it (I got respirations). My partner got BP and it took her forever to take it, but I'm pretty sure she still passed. One thing I was surprised about testing was that you can get the same skill as your partner! I was the second to go, and my partner had gotten feeding, so I was pretty surprised when I got the same skill (since I had just watched her do it and forget about the name card I knew not to forget that part).

Jpeters - that sounds like an interesting job! Good luck trying to figure out your CNA hours as well, hopefully we can both get it worked out in time. I also have to take the TEAS -- I'm hoping to take in April if I can. I think I will try to check out a book from the WakeTech library -- have you started studying?
