Waitlist for nursing school

Published

Hello everyone! Just joined this group hoping to get some feedback/advice. I have been a CNA for ten years and just last term completed all pre-req's to apply to nursing school. One is in town and one is an hour and a half away so of course the in town one is my preference. They had their accreditation pulled a couple years ago and are now under probationary accreditation. (since that started they have based admission on a lottery system...) I got a letter from them today that I was not selected in the lottery but have been placed on the waitlist. (of course I didnt get told what number so I will call on Monday to see if I can find out)

With all my work experience and having a GPA near 4.0 I am having a really hard time wrapping my head around this. I understand the lottery system but just feel like I've worked so hard so its a bit discouraging and disappointing. I was hoping with the "bad" reputation I would not have as much competition.... And I keep trying to tell myself that maybe the program isn't good enough for me or at least I made it to the waitlist but it's not making it any easier. I truly love being in the nursing world and am so ready to take the next step.

So any stories about being waitlisted? Good, bad, anything. Everyone I have known has just gotte n in so haven't heard list stories. Looking forward to being a member of this community!

What school is this? It happens often at community college, It happened to me at Delaware Tech, so I transferred to Vocational school in philly. I start on 8/31/15

Need to know where this is. Publicly funded or completely private?

Publicly funded = "wait in line like everyone else"

Private = "screw the rules, I have money"

I would generally avoid schools that use wait lists rather than competitive admissions. Typically the best change a school that's lost accreditation can do is switch from wait list/lottery admission to competitive admissions, so it's odd that they aren't using competitive admissions.

I wouldn't commute an hour and a half for school, but I would consider moving and going to a school where your cohort will be more tightly grouped in terms of pre-nursing school performance.

It's a public CC in Olympia, WA. They used to have competitive admissions so it is odd. If I get into the other one I may move but it's tough. I'm married and absolutely love my hospital CNA job. (Not to mention my husband's stable employment here he can't really leave plus my friends and family here) Maybe it's just not the right time for me. :) We'll see. I was just curious other people's experiences with being waitlisted.

Congratulations! Very exciting!!

This thread has been moved to the Pre-nursing Student forum to amass responses from others who may be able to offer input and feedback. Good luck to you!

Guess not. But thanks anyway :)

3 year wait here screw the CC route with that GPA go the BSN route sure enough get some financial assistance. Also better job opportunities with a BSN. True private colleges less wait more $$$...$60 Grand here for an ADN.

Delaware Tech did away with the wait list but from what I understand, they've had a competitive ranking process for some time now, at least the last two years. It's based on a point system. You need a minimum GPA of 3.0 and in order to get the maximum points you must get an A in the required courses, be a DE resident and score high on the NLN. The only time you get "wait listed" is of you fail any combination of the required courses twice; if this happens you have to wait two years to reapply

Waitlists are rough, regardless of the institution in focus, to my knowledge as a student... I recognize that this thread is somewhat old, but for anyone reading recently, I'd like to recommend searching for a contingency plan in the event that you can't get in after being waitlisted. At the very least, it's a comfort to know you have some direction whether or not you're accepted from a waitlist.

Stay positive and hopeful, though. You'll achieve your goal eventually, even if it's reached through a different path. Best of luck :)
