Visitors and ICU

Hi

We are looking at all aspects of infection control within our ICU.

I have been asked to look at visitors and infection control.

At the moment we ask everyone to use the alcohol gel on entering and leaving the unit.

Visitors are not asked to wear gloves/aprons unless there is a known infection risk to either patient or visitor.

Please can I ask what specific procedures do you have in place re: visitors to ICU? I would be really grateful for any information.

Thank you

Mary

Exactly the same procedures in our unit:)

We have them use the alcohol gel upon entering the unit (outside the locked doors). Then, they must also wash their hands with soap and water in the corridor (inside the locked doors but before the actual unit), take of any watches (so they can wash their hands properly) and leave coats/handbags in the lockers we have provided. Children are not allowed in the nursery/ICU unless they are siblings of the baby.

Much the same. We also have signs saying if any recent colds, flu, D&V etc then thet can not vist

Hey

WE also only have alchol gel at all the doors, if a patients is in isolation or infected then we ask the parents to wear a yellow apron whilst at the bedspace/cubical, there is also a trolly outside the room with alchol gel on and wipes.

But that's about it.

We ask them to use the alcohol gel provided (inside the locked door) and outside the locked door we have a sign saying not to visit patients when having a cold.

They don' t have to wear aprons or gowns even the patient hat MRSA or Cdiff.

We have alcohol gel outside the locked doors and at each cubicle entry. If a patient is isolated, the visitors must wear yellow gown and gloves while in the cubicle, then remove gown and wash hands with soap before leaving the unit.
