Vandy NP programs

Hi!

I applied to the Vanderbilt program last year, but didn't get in ( I had no previous nursing experience) I am now in a traditional BSN program (and I am so glad I didn't do the straight to masters route!!!) When I applied (which was for the Fall 2007 schedule) there were a little over 450 applicants. So anyone that had turned in their application late wasn't even considered.

As far as someone who actually went there, I am sure there are some people you can PM here on the forums that can give you a clearer understanding of Vanderbilt. Just search for Vandy and see what develops! I wish you the best and I hope you get in!!!

I graduated from the PNP program in August, 2007. I was in the primary care track.

TiBette - were you happy with the program? Did you do it in one intensive year, or distance learning over a couple years? I'm really interested in their PNP program, but I wouldn't be starting till the fall of 2010. I"d love to hear anything you want to share about your experience there, and what kind of job you have now!

I did it in one intensive distance year. It's tough but doable. I think it was the first year that the director of the PNP program was in that position so there were issues of organization. Maybe the kinks have been worked out. I'm working in a Pediatric Infectious Disease Clinic now and really enjoy it.

Did you live at a distance when you completed the program? Do you find that you were well prepared after graduation? Did you work as an RN before you began the program? If so where and how many years? Do you think this expreriece helped you? Thanks so much for all your help... I am just awaiting my answer from admissions:)

I was a distance student the entire time. I was an RN for 11 years before going back to school. I feel prepared now. I have read on some threads that Vandy grads didn't feel prepared. In my opinion, how you feel depends on your prior experience, which program you're in, what kind of student you are, and how your clinicals go. Attitude goes a long way. If you go into it with a negative attitude and want to be spoonfed because you are paying so much to go there...that's not a recipe for success. If you don't have prior experience, you will have to work harder in clinicals because it will all be new to you. As a distance student, I was responsible for finding my own clinical preceptors. I chose to go to places that I knew would be good learning experiences. If you are in a place where you aren't learning, you should look for another site. I think the family program is more challenging because you are learning adults, peds, and women's health. Sorry, didn't mean to get sidetracked. Good luck to you! When will you find out?

Not sure when I will find out I applied at the beginning of February which was late, but they indicated that it was fine since I was an RN already. Thanks for all the advice I might think of some other questions, and I will let you know how the application process goes. We also have a NP in our ER now that graduated in 2007 from the acute pnp program so I have been talking to her also. I am excited and hope I get accepted. Thanks again for all your help:)

Good luck! It's stressful but it's worth it in the long run. You can handle anything for a year. I went to the fall open house and had my application in early so I found out early that I was accepted. How long have you been out of school?
