UMSON Spring 2014 RN to BSN Program

I wasn't able to find too much recent information on this site regarding this particular program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. I decided to start a thread and see if anyone else had some insight or wanted to pool together and start a discussion! :)

Is this a full time program or online/distance?

its fulltime or parttime..and you can do it online or oncampus

There is a traditional BSN program and a online RN-BSN program. I graduated from the RN-BSN program in 2008. I did it in 1 yr-it was tough but thats how I want to get it done. Then, I really like the program and glad I chose that school although it was more expensive. However, I recently I read that the RN-BSN program requires the teas exam for entry. That was not the case when I went there. Why is that exam necessary especially if you have been out of school for many years and the BSN program is suppose to build up what you have learn as a RN?. One of my friends have been a nurse for over 30 years and her hospital is pushing for all the nurses to return to school for BSN. She is not happy about that.

Hi, do you know if you need to have your nursing license to apply? I'm graduating in May with my ADN, and I'm debating whether to try to apply for the fall or wait until the spring when I should have it.

I am sure you need a nursing license in order to apply. That being said, I think you should wait until you pass your boards and have a job before moving on the next step which is a RN-BSN program. My cousin graduated from a Associates program in May and passed her boards on the first try. I suggested she held off applying to a BSN program until she was settled in a job but she felt pressured by some instructors and nursing magazines to get her BSN. However, the next few months was spent job hunting-going on interviews, getting transcripts to the different hospitals, and volunteering at one hospital. To make a long story short, it was very difficult to keep up with her course load and eventually she had to drop the class. Finally, she found a job in Dec in another state and have put her BSN on hold. She is now focused on her nursing career in a cardiac unit where she is having classes and tests and learning all she can about her speciality. She already has outstanding loans from her first degree and after a year employment her hospital pays for BSN classes so she will take advantage of that.

Thank you!! I was thinking I should probably wait too.

No problem. Good luck with graduation, passing your boards and finding your first nursing job.

bcandygurl,

I know this is an old thread but I am a bit torn if I should do part-time or full-time while working full-time. Any suggestions?

I'm currently working full-time and going to school part-time. I'm currently taking 6 credits, and I feel like that is enough. I know a few other students who are taking close to a full load, but I personally couldn't do it. It is a whole lot of reading and writing. Discussion board post due weekly if you are taking online classes and 2-3 short writing assignments/group projects. If those are your strengths, then you could probably do it. It takes me a while though to write.

@bcandygurl did you end up enrolling at UMSON? (i'm in a similar boat as you were... just graduated, passed the NCLEX, hoping to secure a job before going back to school...)
