TWU Spring 2010

BTW, how many of you ladies on here plan on going further than the BSN at TWU?

I plan on it, especially if the job market for new grads hasn't opened up a bit in the next 2 years. I KNOW that I will be an NP, but I'm not sure of my specialty. Having been at a high level manager position in my previous "life" that's just where I feel most comfortable and I think having the role of an NP would be similar for me. But who knows, this world has thrown me a few curves already, so who knows where I'll end up :)

I have been assuming I would not go past the BSN at TWU, since they don't have a PMHNP track available. If my family stays in TX, I will have to go to UTA for that. My Mom sees a PMHNP at her psychiatrist's office who stated that the UTA program is awesome. My husband is open to relocating after I get my BSN, so I will likely apply to multiple programs, and then decide based on where I am accepted. My husband and I have been considering relocating for a while (we are both native north Texans), and grad school may just be the best reason to move.

So how many times has everyone checked their email today? ;-)

only a million :)...has anyone received any emails from TWU yet?

You guys are going to be flabbergasted, but I haven't checked it yet today. I'm trying to put it out of my mind. I guess I should right?

BTW Elizabelle, my dh and I are very open to relocating too. I'm a native North Texas as well but my DH is from Austin and would love to get back there. So I'm keeping my options open too. BTW, my psych NP was actually a teacher at UTA and says that the program is awesome and that many of her friends and colleauges have gone through it and speak really highly of it.

BTW, do any of you ladies read any of the other posts on this board? I have to admit that I got discouraged earlier today when I was reading a post from a teacher who was considering going into nursing and all I saw were VERY negative posts about the hours, the night shifts and all the "crap" nurses have to put up with. I have to admit as a second degree-er I actually got down in the dumps for a bit over my choice to become a nurse. I'm seeing so much negativity about the profession either the hours or the fact that there are no jobs for new grads that I'm about to stop reading anything that isn't posted on this thread. Anyone else experience the same thing?

BTW, I just checked and the only email I got was the one from the library telling me I have an overdue book. Guess I better take care of that :)

wow...i missed a lot of posts lol. well, im glad everyone is sharing info! yah, I have read that the market is not good right now for new grads, buy my husband works for Baylor and he has given a couple of presentations on the lack of nurses and doctors and he said he just doesnt see how the market can be bad for us. He said that Baylor has an active program right now that recruits nurses from the Phillipines just because Baylor can't find nurses. I agree it is depressing butterfly_journey, but I'm thinking that most of those people complaining have not had careers or degrees in another profession and you know how the grass is always greener on the other side-so I'm pretty sure they are just taking out their frustrations and complaints out on here.

Btw, I did get an email from TWU, but it was for a study abroad program, haha. I freaked out when I first saw it.

I don't know about you guys, but when I decided to go for nursing I spent HOURS on this forum, reading all sorts of nursing stories. Some of which have been inspiring, and have encouraged my decision to pursue nursing, but many others have been very, very discouraging. Like anyone, I'm sure, I wonder if I am cut out to be a nurse. There are definitely some unhappy nurses out there. I try not to let it get to me. I just remind myself that there are unhappy people in ANY profession. Those who got into it for the wrong reasons, or who had unrealistic expectations of what the job would be like, or who are a bad match for the type of nursing they are doing, or who just fell into a bad position or poorly run department that anyone would be miserable in. Lots of times I have noticed it seems that there are more horror stories out there than good ones, but then it occurs to me that those who are miserable are usually the ones out there complaining, and the happy ones just go about their business, and might not bother to post something as boring as, "Hey! I love my job!" I do try to focus more on the positive ones, but lately I have had to try to limit my time reading personal stories at all, because I have noticed I tend to let it get to me, and it makes me question myself.

The truth is, I'm 32 years old with 2 kids, and I finally feel ready to do something meaningful with my life career-wise. I am ready to commit myself 100% to this path. I know it will not be easy, and I know nursing is not a glamorous career, and that nurses seem at times to be underappreciated. But I also feel very strongly that I have the right skill set to be a nurse. I have an upbeat personality, I care a lot, and I work hard at everything I do. I have a quote hanging on my bathroom mirror that helps me keep things in focus:

"Happiness is essentially a state of going somewhere, whole-heartedly, one-directionally, without regret or reservation."

So for now, I try to remember that and not question myself. So try not to let those stories discourage you! Your happiness is up to you and only you, and from what I see from everyone on this thread and how dedicated they are, I have no doubt that we are destined to succeed.

Elizabelle, you're right. As my dh says "Keep your own weather" (it's a Franklin Covey thing) and I really try to remember that. I think today it's just hitting me harder than usual since I'm not really doing anything that I would normally consider "productive". I feel better about it now, just a momentary lapse I guess :)

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone has ever thought of TCU or Baylor for their nursing program? I am also waiting for spring 2010 and wondered why no one ever speak of their nursing program.

And is anyone taking patho in denton, I could use a buddy to study with.

I would take Baylor over TCU because TCU is so far away from me. Baylor is WAY closer. But, I was not going to take religion classes for a nursing school. Now, if I happened to not get in for Spring 2010, I would be willing to do so for Baylor as a second attempt into nursing school. but as a first attempt, I was not willing to spend the extra time and $ to take those classes, especially since it is not needed in nursing school.

yes I totally agree, that is what made me not think about them years ago...TCU is so expensive, but I have been thinking about applying for their Oct 1st deadline. just to have options

i was considering tcu for awhile, but changed my mind after talking to someone in admissions from the school. i am part of an organization called "future aggie nurses" here at A&M, and one of the things they do is bring in people from different nursing schools to talk to us about their programs and the admissions process. i'm very glad they do this, because it saved me a lot of time and money. the rep informed us that at tcu their students get priority, meaning if a freshman at tcu is a prenursing major, all they have to do is complete all their prerequisites successfully and maintain a certain GPA, and they are automatically admitted to the nursing school to take their upper division courses. so the number of transfers all depends on how many current students they have that are eligible. she even said that the previous semester they admitted NO transfer students because they simply didn't have space since they had so many eligible current students.

here is where it says that on the website in case anybody was wondering:

Freshman students interested in the nursing program must first be accepted to the university and begin studies with general education course work. Once a continuing nursing student has completed all the prerequisites for the nursing major and has no more than 12 hours of University core requirements (UCR) remaining, the continuing nursing student is eligible to begin nursing courses. All nursing majors must maintain a TCU GPA of at least 2.5.

The number of transfer students admitted to the first semester of clinical courses each semester varies with the qualifications of the applicant pool and school resources. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Harris College Nursing office at 817-257-7651.
