Transfer and move on?

Hi everyone! I would love any advice about something I have been thinking about for while. I would appreciate any feedback!

I am working at a community hospital on a med surg unit for the past 8 months on night shift. I love the staff I work with and it feels like a small family. They taught me so much and Ive had no issues with them and they always lend a helping hand.

But as far as career goals, I would like to try ER nursing and am thinking of transferring to this hospitals ED unit. But not sure when or how to do this. What if i end up hating er nursing? I feel i am cut out for ER but i dont want to leave this unit unless im serious. I dont want to leave my unit now because i am finally comfortable and have my own routine down and learning so much. Im taking classes for BSN online. I will be at this hospital til i finish my BSN and then owe them 6 months. So thats another year n a half i would say.

Should i think about starting all over on another unit with new people already, even though im finally comfortable where i am now? Anyone ever debate when it is time to move on into something new? What was the outcome? Thanks for listening!

You will never know unless you try. Go for the ER job and if it doesn't work out, you can go back to med-surg or any other field of nursing.

It may be good for your own stability to stay in your current job role until you are done with school. I would not change your stressors if you could avoid it until you graduate but that's just me. Then when you go to switch jobs you can give learning how to survive in an ED environment more of your focus.

Can you shadow an ER nurse for a day or two? It might give you a better idea of what you're in for.

If you're planning on leaving the hospital anyway when your 6 mo. commitment is up, honestly I'd stay put.
