Thoughts on WGU

My wife and I have the opportunity to be accepted to the Western Governs University (WGU) BSN program by our employer. We are going in as new students with out any degrees, just health care experience. Our employer is affiliated with the university and we thought we would give it consideration. But before I dive into their process I wanted to get input from the nursing community first.

I have done the research on the school and its curriculum. Seems to be accredited and also it is mainly a competency based training environment rather than the traditional lecture based class room which I like. I wanted to know what you folks think about the school and if you have graduated from there, what your thoughts about the program overall and if it is worth it. Are there any set backs from this type of school to the traditional schools? Would going to this school make it difficult to gain acceptance to a masters program (CRNA program to be exact) Are there things I need to ask or look for when getting ready to apply to the program?

We would have priority in admission to WGU where as being waitlisted on the cal-state system. On top of that, we would have a 2 year contract with the same employer after graduation which seals the deal for me but just wanted input/advice from the veterans/ seasoned nurses.

    Am I missing something? If you go to WGU to get your BSN then why not go for your MSN as well, which means the GPA issue is resolved. I am hoping to do this! With that being said, I do have the say that I have worked hard for my GPA where I am at currently and would be disappointed with a 3.0.

    Is there anything wrong with the MSN program at WGU?

    A lot of people love the MSN programs at WGU, but they're not clinical. There is a Leadership one and an Education one, so if you're looking to become an NP, WGU is not the school.

    I'm currently in the beginning process of acceptance for WGU. My understand is that the 3.0 gpa is on a scale of 3.0 instead of the traditional 4.0. Loma Linda University will recongize and accept the BSN from WGU which is where I'd like to go some day to become an NP.

    I got accepted last march, so I am on the program for a month, and I can tell you that it is awesome, I am loving it!!! I also want to go to Loma Linda, and if I may ask, are you a seventh day Adventist?

    Congrats on getting into the program. No I'm not a seventh day adventist I just really like their program. Although I've always wanted to go to a christian college so hopefully I can go to either Loma Linda or Azusa Pacific University. Loma Linda has a wonderful reputation and a degree from their would really open doors. So how are you liking WGU right now? Funny thing is I'm actually baptist but California Baptist University just doesn't appeal to me much.

    I love WGU so far, they are all very nice, and they walk you thru everything in detail, I love my mentor, she is super nice and is always willing to help, we talk every week and you can ask and talk to her about anything you want she is great, and if you have any questions before or after your phone call meeting you can always email her or call. I am in love with the entire program setup. I think you will love it too!!! Good Luck :-)

    I am considering doing my BSN with WGU as well. I am graduating with my ADN in two weeks and will look to start in Fall. I would really love to hear first hand what the course work is like compared to a traditional online BSN program.

    I have an opportunity to get my BSN in 9 months at my current college but it is not an online program which may make it difficult to work at the same time. Most of the online colleges I have looked into take about a year to complete the program.

    Has anyone received their BSN in less that a year at WGU?

    I really love the program. I like the fact that you don't have to the weekly posting like most online schools. The mentors call u weekly to encourage you to stay on track. Also, they have several resources available to students.

    Yep, less than 9 months. Of course, I like to write. If anyone doesn't like to write and prefers multiple choice tests, this may not be the school for you. I appreciate that I can just work on the parts of the course of study that I need and complete the tasks for proving competency. If I had not been such a perfectionist that first term, I probably could have done it faster. I love that the term is paid at a flat rate for six months and you can get as much course work as you can completed for the same price, which makes this program extremely economical. Besides the mentors are terrific!
