what are your thoughts...

A male patient, usually continent of urine and stool. Left side weakness, can use the commode with a transfer assist.

In hospital for testing and some confusion- requests repeatedly for assistance to the bedside commode for a BM. Nurse puts brief on him and tells him to "just go in your diaper"

Continues to use call bell every 1/2 hour or so, very politely explaining that he does not want to go in the diaper and could someone please assist to commode. Is repeatedly told to go in the diaper.

Wife explains that although he is a bit confused he feels demeaned having to lie in his own stool-still no assistance.

Thoughts?????

let's face it: there are just some nurses who shouldn't be nurses, as they have no concept of how to treat anyone with dignity, respect or even therapeutically promote independence!!!!! nursing like this just kills me, it really does. grrrrrrrrrr......:angryfire

You know what? As I was reading thru all the posts, I had decided I was going to respond with "this is someone's husband/father/grandfather and would any decent person want their own loved one treated this way?"

Then when I read you are speaking of your dad, I was shocked. How awful for you

Please.......if your mom feels unable to confront this situation, you MUST advocate for your dad (and your mom too). It's completely unacceptable

Oh yes...I am on my way there tomorrow. I am VERY protective of my dad-I just can't wrap my head around the fact that this is actually happening! I will keep everyone posted.

:angryfire :angryfire Not only is that ethically wrong, it is patient abuse and neglect. That is morally demeanibg to the patient. That nurse needs FIRED and reported to the state board!!!

omg.....i tried to be good an pass this one up without replying...but i cant!!!!!!

i have a phrase i tell to my new grads and all nurses that are in need of this bit of info....so ya can quote me......hunt that nurse down and tell him/her that::::::

That is the most pathetic story I've ever read....that a nurse, aide or WHOEVER it was....told this grown man, an adult......to go in a diaper!!!

Just pathetic. The nurse needs to have to wear a "diaper" and see how it feels.

And another thing....they aren't called diapers for adults!

They are adult briefs. This staff person is in dire need of some extensive education. I would report it if I were working there.
