Heard of it, but had never seen it happen ... until today.
Had an MD get all excited when I decided to talk to him about adequate pain control for his patient: I had taken care of her for several days and long story short I believe her pain is (ignored) not controlled. (One percocet Q6 prn and this lady screams when we dress her cellilitis-afflicted leg, as well as move her horrifyingly 10+++ edematous feet). I mean this MD is hateful, and appears to just dislike this lady.
Anyhow, I am trying to get him to address it and he starts up in his loud voice, ranting about how she is a faker and a baby, and when I hold my ground about the need for adequate pain control he takes me by the shoulders and shakes me a little and continues his rant about how when she is snowed and obtunded then I will be calling him whining that she is unresponsive, I see from the corner of my eye the whole staff including floats and clerks lined up behind me with their arms crossed. He backed up and said "I'm not mad at you, just frustrated.", so I responded, "I am frustrated too." After a little faceoff she ended up with some new orders...heh.
Now this guy is well known to be a loudmouth and unfortunately unpleasant, but I was never scared and did not feel physically threatened at all (cause I could kick his scrawny butt across the nurse's station in a heartbeat!) but I was greatly heartened by my fellow nurses having my back! So for all the negative posts about backbiting, here is one on the other side. I have known the folks on my unit would cover me if I needed it, and stand next to me when I need it, but today I got real proof and it was a great feeling.

Good job team members
On the other hand I still would have filed a variance for him touching me and shaking me. That is not appropriate behaviour.

Since when is okay for a physican to shake a nurse let alone touch her in frustration! I would be filing a complaint ASAP even if you could kick his butt.
Good for you for advocating for your pt.
No matter what everyone says nurses stick together when one of their own is under fire. You work with a great crew! I have seen the white wall many times and it is an amazing site.
If a white wall doesn't appear when you need it most, find somewhere else to work!:smiley_ab

I don't know what white wall you are talking about but I encourage you to file a complaint against that physician. That should never be tolerated. Maybe you weren't afraid but many others would be, regardless if it was possible to throw him across the nurses station or not. That would scare and upset me to pieces.

Forget filing a variance or a complaint - go for criminal charges. It is totally inappropriate not to mention illegal for this bozo to lay hands on you. Where is adminisration in this? I'm glad to see your coworkers backed you up. It makes me mad just reading about it.

I would like to applaud you and give you a pat on the back!
As a nursing student I have been taught that pain is whatever the experiencing person says it is, existing whenever he/she says it does! Obviously this Dr. needs to be informed that providing pain relief is considered a "basic human right," and is incorporated into the Pain Care Bill of Rights.....it is a legal right! I have also been taught that it is a nurse's responsibility to accept the patient's report of pain....and to act upon it!
You did a great job!!
Its also refreshing to hear that the Great White Wall does exist!!

Why not file charges against this Dr. for assault and battery??? Maybe it would teach him a lesson!

I can not believe that he did that. That is just plain right wrong. It was assault and battery let alone unproffesional, extremely unprofessional. Administration needs to do something about that.

My thoughts exactly. He should never have touched you like that.

The "White Wall" is nurses standing side by side, supporting each other.

few issues i see.
yes it's a wonderful feeling when we all pull together. i'm glad you had that experience.
continue to advocate for your pt's pain, and continue to document all interactions with the doc with his response.
if you don't want to file a complaint against this doc, please let him know in no uncertain terms that 'next time', there will be consequences to his behavior.
my son recently had one of his teachers physically threaten him. son did not want me making a big deal about it. i did report to the headmaster; investigation revealed guilt of teacher.
i personally emailed this teacher and let him know (in no uncertain terms) that i will make sure this never, ever happens again. no charges filed but God forbid should there ever be a next time.
what i'm saying, is you want this incident somewhere on record.
at least you had all those witnesses that backed you up. good going.
