Textbooks

Hey all!

So my program starts this fall and I'm pricing textbooks. I was wondering, after nursing school, did you continue using your books? Should I pay and "invest" in my books or should I rent them? The first semester's books will be used in the following semesters, but I'm wondering if it's wiser for me to rent them for the 4 semesters and save a few dollars or if I should just bite the bullet and pay?

Any thoughts? Thanks =)

Good day, hotmessmanda:

The only book I've kept was the one for AP1/AP2. The rest I either rented or sold back after the class was over. Now, I was told that when/if I get into the actual program (aka clinicals), then it pays to buy the books (used or new) vs. rent as you typically (at least at our school) use the same "nursing books" for several semesters (which would make renting as expensive or more expensive than buying).

Thank you.

I rented the majority of my books and bought the "recommended books" and saved a TON of money; try Amazon and find deals on the books, if possible.

I bought all of my books through half.com. I do not like having highlighted books so I bought New or Like New. After I was finished I either kept them, or sold them back for roughly what I paid. A few books I even sold for more. Most of my books were used in multiple semesters, or used as references for papers or careplans.

I rented books for specialty courses like psych, OB, and peds. I bought used & kept my fundamentals, med surg, and assessment books. Those are helpful.

I just graduated, and I'm selling all of my books. With how fast advancements happen and research updates what we know, our books are outdated before they're printed. You can find more current books as needed after school.

If I could rent my books I likely would. Unfortunately our school bookstore doesn't allow us to do that because we are required to use the online portion that the company puts out and they will not let us buy the code separate. If I were to rent the texts from someplace else for 4 semesters it would cost just about the same as buying the books, and I would still have to but the online portion code.

I'd say if it works and saves money for you then go for it, if you decide a book is useful enough to keep it you can always purchase it. Usually if you decide to do that the amount of money you pay for renting is put towards the price - if you buy it while you're renting it.

For all of my pre reqs I used bookrenter. LOVE them!! Free shipping both ways and cheap. I bought my fundamentals book on eBay for $45 and it is in great condition. I agree with Indy8, I am going to keep fundamentals, med surg, and assessments but rent the rest. Good luck!
