Terrified...inspire me

1.The best day.

Dang where do I start?

How about the day when I was in a pub and a total stranger (or so I thought) came and handed me another pint and said

'You most probally don't remember me, but I remember you... you nursed me in April 1995, this is just to say thanks'

2. The most rewarding moment?

this one is easier..

each time I know our team has saved someone's life.

again fairly easy..

each time a new patient comes to the ward...and you think

'How are we going to help this one?'

1. My best days in nursing school are always when I get positive feedback from my clinical instructors. It's always great to know that I'm doing right and getting the hang of things!

2. My most rewarding moments are after a long day of clinical, my patient tells me "You are going to be such a great nurse."

3. Oh, the challenges......studying, finding time to sleep, feeling like everything else in my life has taken a backseat to nursing school, and finances while in school. There are probably many others but these are the big ones.

My best day in nursing school? It is a tie - coaching a laboring mom and being there during the delivery & the day I walked across the stage and got my diploma (I've gotten to do that 3 times - ASN, BSN, MSN).

My best day at work? Any day that I haven't cried, the students haven't cried, and none of the patients died. My worst day? The day my best friends sister coded and we couldn't bring her back - and we tried for 3 hours because she was only 25 and had a new baby. I love being a nurse - every day. I love teaching nursing students - because nursing is an art. There are lots of people who graduate from nursing school, but beleive me - not all of them are a "nurse." I have had the privelge of being there when people were born, and when others died. I have shared good times with patients & families and times that have sucked. I have worked with some of the greatest nurses in the world, and some of the worst. But I learn something everyday - sometimes about nursing, sometimes about myself. I would not trade my nursing career for anything - I hope that you love and find it as fulfilling as I have for the last 27 years.

I too moved to start nursing school. When I moved I did not know anybody. It is hard at first to be away from friends and family. However, I have met so many good friends in nursing school and I am really happy I made the decision to go where I did.

Most rewarding day in nursing school was when a patient was so upset that I would not be back the next day she was almost in tears!!! I knew I had made a connection and made a difference to her. This was a patient that the night nurse had said was difficult and forgetful, and she was neither. Somehow we clicked and had both had a great experience.

Best day was a very busy one that I don't think I stopped for one second, just kept rushing from pt. to pt. At my school we get one or two patients per student, but mine was very low maintenance so I ran around helping other patients that did not have students as well as helping my classmates with their patients. The time just flew by, and when we were done my nurse looked me dead in the eyes and said a heartfelt "Thank you". I really felt like I did good that day.

Second best was my first IM injection - piece of cake!! I was petrified to do it but it was fine.

I just finished my first semester and about to start the second, so hopefully I have lots more "bests" to come! Several of my classmates had to relocate for school and I can imagine how hard that must be, but keep in mind it is temporary. You will make close bonds with some of your classmates and it will be worth it in the end. Good luck to you!!! :)

I think I can inspire you more by not simply answering questions, but sharing my story.

I was so frightened of nursing school. So full of self-doubt. Well, passing nursing school has not only strengthened me skillwise, but it constantly proved to me just how strong I really was. I was terrified before my first IM injection- but did it and got great comments from my teacher. My first IV, I was terrified, how could I do that- but I did! My first catheter, the perils of the sterile field, the selfdoubt- but I did it! These constant boosts of self-esteem and proving my doubts wrong gradually ate away at my fear of nursing school and replaced it with an overwhelming joy that I CAN do this and I will be a nurse!!! I was so proud as I was pinned, so elated after receiving the PASS from the NCLEX and signing "RN" behind my name. Knowing that I will never have to worry about getting a job and that I can help people every single day. Sure, there are bad days and days I still doubt myself, but when you get to help people every day, you just feel so blessed.

You can do it. And you are going to have the time of your life finding out that you can do it!

you will make the BEST friends you will ever have while in nursing school. They will be your backbone, your support system and understand when you need to scream. You have a whole new world in front of you- take a big deep breath and dive in!
