Termination

Have been an LPN for over 30 years. Work has been getting more difficult and I have been struggling. I try my best but can't seem to get everything done. I am working as hard as I can. I should have tried to find another job but I didn't. Just recently I was fired for poor work performance. I have signed up for unemployment but not sure if I can get it. I am feeling depressed and like a failure. I'm not sure if I can find another job because of the termination and poor economy. Any words of wisdom or encouragement would be appreciated.

I would encourage you to look into an extended care home health position. Working with one client for a shift should be easier to handle. If you can't transfer or reposition patients, then try to get on with a toddler or infant. Night shift with a stable baby would allow you to have as little stress as possible, perhaps only your assessment at start of shift, alert watching thoughout the night, some meds, and maybe only one diaper change. Something to consider. Best wishes.

Nursing homes with long term care are usually always looking for LPN's, and are usually always understaffed. I don't think that if you get proactive and get out there and apply from 8 am to 5 pm everyday that you will have a job by the end of the week.

That sucks. It seems a lot of places are doubling and tripling our workloads. I know you are frustrated, hurt, and worried, but start looking now. It can take awhile to get unemployment ( here it takes approx 12 weeks). Good luck.

i'm sorry you got fired! take a couple of days to wallow in your misery, and then get out there and look for another job. you probably already know your strengths and weaknesses, so look for a position that plays to your strengths. good luck!

1. Good for signing up for unemployment. The facility may fight you and automatically file an objection to your unemployment filing. Many times facilities automatically deny and object even if unemployment is justified. If the facility fights your application, you will have to appeal. The appeal paperwork is not difficutl but it takes some weeks to get a hearing date. For the hearing, you and the entity will have to be present. The facility may not send anyone and you automatically win the appeal and get unemployment. If the facility does show up, you have to present your case. Be prepared to provide information about the circumstances concernig your dismissal. Even if you do lose, you are still eligible but there may be some penality weeks. The unemplolyment booklet will provide you with all the info about the appeal process.

2. "I am feeling depressed and like a failure. I'm not sure if I can find another job because of the termination and poor economy." Look, things happen. It may be the time to consider another area of nursing. Possibly acute care is not right for you now. Consider home health, private duty, or other areas of nursing that do not involve acute care work. Now that summer is with us, there may be camp nurse positions available. I know you feel awful but take care of yourself, get some exercise, eat right, and get enough sleep. There is a job out there; you just have to decide what area of nursing is right for you.

If you still have your nursing license you'll be OK

Do I have to put I was terminated on an application, or can I put some other reason down? I'm afraid if they see termination they won't even consider me for the job.

Yes, you have to come clean eventually, misrepresentation on an application can you get you fired again later and un-qualify you for unemployment. You can always write "Will Discuss" it's a dead giveaway, but I'm sure some will be willing to hear your story. Good luck!

Hey, where are ya? Our facility can definitely use an experienced LPN! Several actually...

Oh and after 30 years, who WOULDN'T be overwhelmed at times? Sheesh, seems to me there would have been some alternative that could have been figured out rather than termination.. that's just HARSH!

I finally received a call for an interview for a job at a doctors office. Thank you everyone for your support and suggestions. Wish me luck with the interview.

I am sorry. I have not read all of the advice/comments so forgive me if it has been mentioned but I am going to suggest Home Health. One on One patient care and not having to work with multiple people. Good Luck!

Nursetweety - I am just curious, what setting did you work in for most of your career? Were you in Geriatrics the whole time? I work in NYC and I know a lot of clinics also hire LPNs and that does not involve changing and positioning immobile patients.
