TCN scam

Published

I was swayed into signing with TCN, was told I would be able to get my RN in 18 months. I can't pass the practice exams so I haven't been able to take the exam to even try to pass the course. I have called for assistance and was told the same thing "review my study habits". I have complained to the better business Bureau and to the school over the phone and in writing, each time I am told "I can't cancel my contract, and there is no time limit." They have gotten me for $15, 000.00, that I can't afford and I can't go to another school because I don't have the money. Can anyone help me with this issue? I am 54 years old and have 21 years nursing as a LPN , never have I seen such uncaring people. It bothers me to think we have such under handed people that takes advantage of people that might one day save their life.

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!

What did the better business bureau say? I wouldn't pay it and get a lawyer to get money back. I am sure there are flaws in the contract somewhere. I'm sorry you are going through this.

I'm currently paying TCN for an education not received. They are horrible. There was absolutely no support with the courses. A collection agency is collecting my payments. I wasn't going to pay them, but after speaking with an attorney, I found out that it was technically a school loan and my wages would end up being garnished.

It's actually a private loan from a private lender that does not have the protection re; interest rates, collection practices, garnishment, deferment and forbearance that a federal sub/unsubsidized school loan has. (tCN is a publisher not a school or educator so financial aid and federal student loans do not apply)

My issue is they present the costs as a payment plan and are not upfront explaining that this is a interest bearing private loan from a third party lender. It is not linked to using the program or completing the coursework (with the exception of not being accepted for admission to the nursing program in some contracts) just like you still have to pay your credit card bill if you use the card to buy a book that you never read

I wonder why the attorney told me otherwise. I'm going to have to further research this. I don't think it's right to pay for services not received.

Have you had issues with them too?

Justbeachy you are correct that it is like a personal loan, however TCN does not tell you this when you sign up with them. I thought the school was financing this and then after the first month I found out it went through a credit union.

This is just wrong in more ways then one. BBB just sent TCN the complaint I filed and TCN said they sent me a letter answering my complaint. TCN did send me a letter that stated "We provided you the material and you are obligated to pay the loan."

PLEASE IF ANYONE HAS ANSWERS......I NEED HELP.

They provided you the material, you are obligated to pay for it under contract. TCN has been discussed many times on this site and the bottom line remains the same. Suggest, as others have done, that you contact the Attorney General's office in your state.

I guess you could always just not pay it and let it ride on your credit for 7 years. I'm strongly considering that option.

JustBeachy is correct, and this is what so many people don't seem to get about TCN. You are not paying for classes as you go, like you would in a college, and, if you stop taking classes, you stop paying tuition. This is like buying a car on time. People sign a contract agreeing to purchase the entire series of modules, and agree to pay for the entire series. If you don't do well in school, or change your mind, or whatever, you don't get to stop paying; just the same as if you buy a car, and then decide that the car doesn't meet your needs or you don't need the car anymore -- you don't get to stop making the car payments; you still owe the money for the car.

TCN's entire business model is based on misleading people. The sales people tell people whatever they need to to get them to sign up. If they were open and honest with people about what they were offering, no one would ever sign a contract with them. Unfortunately, individuals are responsible for reading and understanding all the "fine print" in the contract before they sign; if they don't do that, it's not TCN's responsibility.

The problem with refusing to pay is the resulting lawsuit, judgement against you, and the cleaning out of your assets in settlement of the judgement. Also discussed here in the past.

Strongly not recommended as the ability to collect a judgement doesn't magically disappear until you fulfill your obligation. They can even go after your estate if you die, unlike a federal student loan that can be forgiven upon death.

The service is the study guide. You took out a private loan to pay for study modules. If you did not receive all you contracted for then request them. Most people I know did not request the subsequent study guides but received when asked. The service is not an education as they are not a school.

I did not sign up with them after doing my research and reviewing their terms and conditions.
