Hi All:
I am finishing up my nursing school pre-req's and would like some advice on recommended classes to take in summer. I am taking Human AP II and am thinking about also taking Microbiology. Any advice?
Thanks.

In my community college, our summer classes are accelerated. Depending on who you talk to some would advise you not to take A&P or Mirco during the summer. I, however, have not taken my A&P yet (will be doing that in fall/ A&P 2 spring.) So I do not know how challenging that class is.
If you are young and childless (I am young, lol but have children) I wouldn't see a problem in taking an those classes this summer. Good Luck, Learn Lots, and Enjoy!! :-)

If it's a short semester, these will be intense classes for sure. I had both my A&P classes during regular semesters with other science classes and found them to be time-consuming. How much time can you spend studying? Do you need to get an A? How did you do with A&PI? If you are a strong science person, you might be okay. I know some people are able to pull off two science classes w/labs in these short semesters with no worries. Personally, I'd probably only do it if I had no other choice.
Good luck.

I took AP II and Med term over an accelerated summer quarter, and it definitely took all the free time I had. I dont have children, but I do work full time. It really depends on how well you can handle stress and your time management skills. My BP was definitely elevated during that quarter lol. But I did it, and Im glad I did because I would have had to wait another full year to apply to the Nursing program if I had taken the courses at a later quarter.
If it wont affect your application deadline then I would take the summer off. I definitely missed getting outside more often and being able to enjoy the weather during that time. Breaks are good! Glad I get this summer off before my program starts this fall!
Good luck in whatever you decide:)

If your summer semester is 10-12 weeks long, I would take ONE science class and maybe another easy class (psych, computer, math, elective if required) if you have any other classes to get out the way. Otherwise, I would wait unless you're starting a nursing program in the fall and *have* to have these classes done beforehand.

At my school, all summer classes are accelerated, and that can be a good or bad thing. It's good because you finish necessary prerequisites faster and you have them out of the way; it's bad because the course material, which doesn't get any easier, is crammed into a much shorter time frame. We take 16 week courses and turn them into 8 week summer nightmares. I took A&P II during the summer and, personally, I found it horrendous (granted I was taking English, Intro to Psychology, and French along with it). I am taking microbiology now and, while it isn't the hardest thing I've ever taken, I don't think I would like it condensed into a summer session. I would say if you are going to take the courses during the summer, find out if your institution shortens them and if they do, look into taking one or the other, not both, unless you have absolutely nothing else to do during the summer.
