Summer 2017 Chat

Haha! We're using the cat all semester-long so we had to start skinning right off the bat. First 5 weeks is for muscle identification, then lab exam -- and the last 5 weeks is for organ and blood vessel identification, then 2nd lab exam. I'm looking forward to but also dreading learning the location and names of the muscles and their functions

I'm starting A&P in two weeks and I'll be right there with you. The muscles scare me the most and knowing how they relate to the nervous system. Just a daunting amount of work that lies ahead!

Soooo I'm getting fingerprinted tomorrow for my Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance card. And getting the last of my immunizations/records needed for the program. And I scheduled my advisor meeting for June 13 to pick up my application and my TEAS exam for August 25. I also just finished my first week of A&P II! Things are getting real over here, folks!!

We did muscles in A&P I here, too! I hated them. We started A&P II with the circulatory system.

You didn't do muscles in A&P I?

Yes and no. For the first half of A&PI we were required to be able to identify tissues under microscopes, including cardiac, smooth, and skeletal muscle tissue. The second half of lab was memorizing all 206 bones and accompanying bone structures (which was the emphasis of A&PI at my college). In lecture, we only briefly went over smooth, cardiac, and skeletal muscle tissue by identifying their location (cardiac - heart; skeletal - atop bones; smooth - hollow internal organs/viscera), their characteristics (which we also went over in lab), etc. So this semester, the emphasis is now on the muscular system -- so we'll go more in-depth with everything and learn the majority of the muscles of the body (including the entirety of the nervous system, the digestive system, the lymphatic system, the respiratory system, and the circulatory system).

"Daunting" is a pretty accurate description haha! But I think we got this

I'm here to vent.

I'm done with almost all of the prereqs I can take before the nursing program, including a few that are considered part of the program but may be taken prior to acceptance. The only one I have left is General Chemistry I, which I am taking this summer, and I HATE it!

I'm 35 and coming into nursing after a BA and being a stay at home mom. My instructor is maybe 5 years older than me. He has very little teaching experience. He really tries way too hard to be likeable - joking with students, constantly seeking students' approval, trying to be "cool". None of this is really a problem, but I find it rather annoying.

The material is not difficult. In fact, it is downright boring. I'm not going to slack off though because this is a 5 hour class and it would be stupid not to get an easy A. There are a few things in the labs that are ambiguous, especially since the instructor really only glossed over them. Of course half the class had the same question. I sit at the back, so it took him a while to get to me. When he did finally answer my questions, he only would answer two then he walked off saying that I had reached my quota. Umm... I'm not done just because you got frustrated.

This is going to be a long semester.

Your instructor is doing you a HUGE disservice by glossing over anything. My gen Chem teacher held us accountable for more chapters in our text than the local university Chem teacher does for his class. Make sure you can do solution stochiometry, dilutions and understand how to do titrations properly. I'd honestly drop the class and take it with a good teacher.

I was in the Spring chat, just wanted to update that I got accepted into the one program I applied for :) I'm super excited, but I'm also just a little bit pregnant so I am concerned about getting a physical clearance from my PCP as I'm seeing midwives and not an OB. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly.

I am taking Intermediate math on campus this summer. I withdrew from the class because I was failing it during the spring semester. Then i will be taking my science classes during the fall and spring semesters. I am also taking art appreciation.
