Student Malpractice Insurance...

Hi! I just learned state that I am in (and I'm sure a lot of others) require that all student nurses carry their own malpractice insurance. Is the insurance that student nurse have the same that I might have as an RN? Also, about how expensive is it?

The liability insurance that you have as a student can be carried over and upgraded when you become licensed as RN with no break in coverage. You can go to www.NSO.com and receive free quotes:

I know insurance is always good to have "just in case" but I was wondering do you know when would be a good time to start having the insurance if your state doesn't require it. How often are student nurses involved in malpractice situations? TIA!

Hello, DesertRain,

I do not have stats immediately available regarding Nursing Students involved in lawsuits, but unfortunately, do have experience with this.

I advise any Nursing Student and/or Nurse to carry individual liability. So, start as the student and carry throughout your career. Small price to pay for peace of mind.

Normally, for the student, fees are very inexpensive for annual rates.

I think this insurance is included in our tuition for NS at the CC....do you recommend ADDITIONAL private insurance in this instance?!?! :eek:

Phew, ok, thanks Siri. When I saw the word "malpractice" I was thinking it was going to be quite expensive. That's definately something I'm going to try to always have...

I always recommend individual liability for the student and nurse.

All malpractice insurance policies have limits of liability. Other defendants employed at your entity may and probably do share your liability limits under the same policy. If you, as well as others, are named in a suit, your legal costs, including any settlement, could exceed your employer's shared liability limits. This would mean out-of-pocket expense(s) for you.

Bump for an update on this topic. I was told to procure my own insurance. Is NPO still the best or most widely used provider, facilitator, agent or whatever they are? I checked with my own insurance agents first and neither of those agencies writes student liability policies. They only cover licensed LPN and RN people who are employed.

Edited to add: Looking at the NPO Marketplace, I don't see any student nurse option there. O only see insurance for healthcare employees.

I was quoted for (annual premium) for 2 different states $30 and $36, worth it? U bet...

Unfortunately, the sue happy people have ruined it for us. Protect yourself!!!

I am planning on getting it when I start school this fall. I believe in IL I was quoted 36.00/yr. Such a small price to pay for piece of mind!
