Squeamish Students?

I'm a pre-nursing student, currently in a Microbiology class. I like it, and it's great!

In one of the labs, we were doing tests on vials of urine to determine if they have or don't have a possible STI or UTI. During this session, a fellow student of mine dropped her vial of "possibly gonorrheaic" urine onto the floor. It shattered into a billion pieces and left a puddle.

Everyone ran away

All 11 students in the lab (I'm #12) freaked out and wouldn't go near it. So I took it upon myself to put on some gloves and clean it up.

I guess I've got the advantage of not being squeamish about stuff, but I was really surprised at how afraid all the other students were of... urine.

I'm venting a little because I thought that fellow nursing students were built a little tougher, but I guess everyone else has their breaking points. We'll see how we all do on fungating tumors/necrotizing wounds, eh?

Thats so silly. You are going to be a great nurse. I guarantee that half if not more of them wont make it through nursing school. I think alot of people get into nursing completely blind without really understanding what it all means & entails. I would have cleaned it up too though, thats just how I am, something needs to be done, ill jump to do it if no one else will. Honestly though, urine is the least of their gross factor problems. Wait until ER room clinicals...they will be in for the shock of their lives...vomit, urine, fecal matter, gushing blood, exposed bones & organs, smell of burnt flesh.

I wouldn't go that far. But I agree with the rest of your comment- The actual program might shake these folks out.

I hope so, if only for the sake of my fellow CNAs. The world doesn't need any more of those, "Omg! EW! Do I really have to touch pee/poop/vomit/blood/whatever?" nurses. I'm like, yes. Yes, you do. :cautious: Along with many other things that are far, far worse.

Of those 11 I wonder how many want to work L&D? (seems like thats a highly desired area for many) I wonder if they realize that they will get (a) splattered with blood (their face, hair and clothes), (b) slip in a pool of blood from a hemorraging patient, © get peed on by a baby boy and finally © have to hold a bucket while their patient vomits....and yes, all of this happened in TWO days on the floor...MY FIRST TWO DAYS! LOL!

Poker face! Lol, hardest thing I had to learn. I can usually hold one pretty well, but I think the real test was cleaning C-Diff. If you can hold a poker face through that, you are the MASTER of poker face!

This is actually a weird class, regarding classmates. Not in this lab, but in Lecture there are 4 girls at one table that often admit that they're becoming a nurse so they can find a doctor to marry. I thought that this was just a joke on Allnurses, but it's real! Not even a secret ulterior motive, but an openly admitted career goal! While I'm ranting, I'm going to say that only two of them are probably cute enough to actually pull that off!

My friend and study partner (we're the older folks in the class, and we also had A&P 1&2 together) says that during the Nursing Assistant (CNA) clinicals, she had to give a stern talking to to a gaggle of her classmates for peeking at and giggling about an unconscious patient's erection.

And yes, there is tons of "I'm not going to deal with poo or pee or anything, but I want to work in L&D because babies are sooooo cute!!!"

Rant! Rant! I should have named this the Rant Thread!

Hopefully the uptick in female doctors means I might get to marry one.

Oh another rant!

I hear so often the "OH EM GEE, WE GONNA MAKE SO MUCH MUNNYYYYY!!!!!!!111oneoneoneoen. MY SISTER SAYS THAT IN MINNEAPOLIS NEW GRADS ARE GETTING HIRED FOR $75,000 + SIGN ON BONUS AND YOU MAKE SIX FIGURES WITHIN TWO YEARS!!! LOLOLOLOL I'M GOING TO GET A DIFFERENT COLORED MINI COOPER FOR EACH DAY!!!!"

Granted, I too was drinking the recruiter/internet "nursing shortage/instant hire/high wages/bonuses" Kool-Aid when I first started this journey. However, thanks to both Allnurses and some hard data from other research, I've discovered it's not quite so rosy. Given the physical nature of the job (and that I'm not getting younger) and the risks involved (needlesticks and other real dangers) I sometimes ask myself if I really want to be an RN. Maybe I could stick out some more schooling and get into Optometry or Pharmacy, etc.

I'm trying to explain to these young girls (19-20 tops, still at home, never had a job before, etc) that they need to really research things for themselves and not listen to the 'hype' about nursing as a career. The golden era was 7-10 years ago, this is a different time.

I'm trying to help, but it's not what they want to hear.

I loved microbiology class..that is so funny, people running from urine :roflmao:...gsss lol they got lots more worse things to see...trust me.
