speech impair

As long as you can communicate, I can't see why not. could you expand on what your speech impairment is? I see you are 23. Are you in college now?

After working as a CNA, I wanted to go into nursing. One of my family members told me I shouldn't go into nursing because I have a speech impair. Can you still be nurse if you have a speech impair? My grades are all A and high B.

My daughter's speech therapist has a speech impairment. If she can do her job effectively (and she certainly can), I don't see why you should be discouraged from entering the nursing profession. Good luck!

I work with another nurse who has a speech impairment..not exactly sure the specifics..something to do with her pallet ((???))..she does just fine...some words she has trouble with but is clearly understood when she takes her time to pronunciate(sp?).....go for it..and best of luck to ya (((hugzzzzz)))

I work with a colleague who has the most extreme stutter I have ever heard. I don't mean the stutter that most of us get when we've done 6 nights - this guy has to literally force out his words.

Having said that, he is one of the most knowledgable, dynamic, skillful and empathic (?sp) practitioners I have ever worked with. .

He really struggles when he introduces himself to strangers or new families, if he goes into unknown situations he gets into speech difficulties....

but I've seen him manage a full-on cardiac arrest in a 3 week old, complete with chest opening and internal massage.

And guess what - every single order came out clearly, with confidence and without the trace of any impairment.

There is no reason why your speech impairment should make you a lesser nurse, or unable to provide first rate care for your future clients.

Good luck, just get out there and show the disbelievers what you are capable of.

I don't have a speech impairment, but since I was born I have had fine tremors in my hands. I was really worried about it growing up because I was always afraid I would not be able to be a nurse with this handicap. Sometimes it is barely noticeable but when I do something that requires fine motor skills or I am nervous it is more noticeable. I was really worried about being able to start IVs and such. I found my own way of doing things, for example, when I start an IV I have to balance my forearm on the beside table, this helps to steady my hands. I am able to function just fine. You will find your way. Dont worry so much! You will fine your way too.

Of course you can go into nursing/ healthcare..My 2nd semester clinical and classroom instructor stutters...I mean really sutters...She lectures, and she just does it. She's been a nurse for over 40 years with that sutter...I really admire her. Don't allow others to mold you, it's YOUR life...GO FOR IT.

I work with a nurse with a speech impairment. He seriously has to slow down in his speech, except in casual talk. But when he's on the phone with an MD, or in report, or something's going on...he.....talks......very.....slow......and......clear....or else he will stutter. He's a fantastic nurse.

If it's your dream to be a nurse, then go for it!

Well, this speech impairment didn't stop you from being a CNA, so why should it stop you from being a nurse?
