Hello everyone. My name is Ebby and I am looking for a preceptor for the FNP program at UT in Dallas, Tx. I have called several private practices and health centers in search of a preceptor with no success. Does any have any suggestions on how to find a preceptor?

Try your local NP organization. The one here in Ohio lists preceptor needs on their website and Facebook pages. Good luck in your search....finding a preceptor should not be the hardest part of NP school....sadly, it often is.

Usually presenting yourself to the clinic/potential preceptor is better than just calling.

Just a tip from a fellow np student....use Facebook! It sounds crazy but I found a local NP group on FB, sent a request for preceptors via personal message to each of the 101 members, and within 24 hours I have 7 preceptors lined up with several more checking with colleagues to help me out. In the few days following I've received multiple other offers, referrals to Peds/GYNs for those hard to get preceptors, and an entire community of future colleagues supporting me...even invited me to the next meeting and dinner in January! I am absolutely amazed!

The north Texas nurse practitioner organization has a website for preceptor. But you have to become a member to view the list. Also Texas nurse practitioner organization has a preceptor section also. Membership to tnp is free for 1 year if you are a np student.

From the other side of the equation:
Be very careful with spamming personal private messages via Facebook looking for a preceptor. It is wonderful that the poster got some responses, but many NPs would not appreciate that. In my humble opinion you are much better served being professional and presenting yourself to local providers/offices.
It really is a shame that schools have gone this route, it is a disservice to the students.

She hates the idea of students just showing up when she has patients to see and won't give up time to see the student and thus just saying "no" would be her response just to get the student gone.
