I just got a job as a scrub nurse/tech and I am an LPN. I graduated from LPN school in June. My OR team loves to hire LPN's as opposed to surg tech's, FYI which also makes one more marketable. But I hear that surg tech schools have been around for over 8 years. I was going to go on for my RN, until I began to scrub. I have SO much fun scrubbing, Im going to go VERY slow in getting my RN. Go For It!!!

What is the everage salary for a scrub nurse? Sounds like an interesting position.
[bANANA]That is great news. So what do you do, just apply at any hospital? Were you working there prior to getting the job, did you know someone? Wow! I am happy for you too. I want to get my RN also but that may help if i can get a job in this area. [/bANANA]

The salary where i work for an LPN scrub nurse is a couple more dollars on the hour than the hospital's LPN pay. And that'll vary with each facility.
I worked at the hospital i work at now for a year on a med-surg floor as an aide, before i applied for the OR. Got the job 2 months before graduation. The place i work trains their own scrubs, there are a few hospitals that do that.

If you're in Dallas, try the Dallas VA. They have lots of LPN/LVN out there that scrub. Parkland may also give you a shot.
Most of the scrubs I know in Dallas graduated from tech schools and the nurses who scrub are RNs who learned in an OR internship.
If you are persistant many of them will give you a shot.
Another suggestion, El Centro has a periop. certificate for nurses. It is for RNs, but if you call up the Surgical Tech director and plead you case, she might be able to set up something for you at a local hospital.
Parkland may also give you a shot.

Hope this doesnt sound weird, but can you tell me exactly the day to day of your job as a scrub nurse? right now Im LVN in SNF, my long term goal is cosmetic/plastic and the other day I was looking at jobs and seen they were hiring a RN for OR and said they had a VN for scrub, I thought hmmm maybe if I scrub then gain my RN I can move up to that position in the same company rather than work the ladder in more than one job... thank you !
