Scared

Hi Redd,

First off it is normal to be scared, especially being a mother. The thing to think of now, is, LONG term..the better you will feel about yourself ,being who and what you want to be..your children learning it takes WORK to get anywhere in life. Being better able to provide for your family after your education and job opportuntities. MY Opinion only, if you WANT to become an RN, or higher, go for it all..trust an "old" nurse, tommorow is hard to find if you stop at LPN and think you will be going back after you work a year or two..just my two cents..good luck, YOU can do it!

I would say you having 3 kids can handle going straight to RN. For several reasons. I have 3 kids for example, so it can be done. Also RN pays better, and there's more jobs for RNs as opposed to LPNs

I am in a similar position as you. I have two boys (3 1/2 and 2) and find myself pushing back nursing school again and again. I am very unhappy as a SAHM, but I would have to pay a FORTUNE for daycare if I went to school. I keep telling myself that I will have more time when they are in school full-time, but I really need (for my mental health & happiness) to go to school now.

I know for me that if there is any way I can swing daycare, I would go now. Sorry to hijack your thread....I just wanted to reassure you that you aren't alone!

Oh, and I vote for RN! LPN's do mostly LTC in my area and I am not interested in that area.

I'm with you too, I have 3 kids, my baby is 9 months old and 2 older ones are in school so that wouldn't be so bad except for helping them w/ their homework when I should be doing my own ( I guess thats when daddy can help). Very limited income here to go on also, with lots and lots of prayers and faith, we can get through this...

Lets do it, we are soooo busy doing cooking, laundry and housecleaning for everyone else, we need to do something for ouselves too, even though it will benefit them too in the long run. When is the last time you did anything for yourself ( or bought anything for yourself) If you will- I will. Lots of luck to you..Amy

Yes, you can do this, you can do this, you can do this you can do this. There was a woman in my class with 7 kids who became a single mom part way through. She graduated. You can get money from state education assistance organizations: they'll give you money, you sign a paper stating that you'll work X amt of time as a RN in the state and you don't have to pay the money back. You're gonna do that anyway, right? Your school can help you find this kind of money. Hospitals and other healthcare facilities have similar deals, such as this link I found:

That's just an example I found when I searched for "virginia nursing education tuition assistance" or something along those lines. I don't know anything about that organization--only, my point is that the money is out there and it's not too too hard to find.

You don't have to be the star student making all A+ grades. You just have to graduate and pass your boards (yeah, that's all, no big deal right?!?! :sofahider ) and you will be so proud of yourself. Yes you can!

And, let me add, you can get your kids involved in the action too. I practiced a lot of my hands-on assessment skills with my son--listening to breath/bowel/heart sounds, and let him listen to me, palpating lymph nodes, etc. He loved it! He still asks me to do some of the cranial nerve assessment stuff with him because he thought it was funny, and it's been almost 2 yrs since i was practicing that stuff. So nursing school doesn't have to mean you have no time with your kiddos. And your kids will be *so proud* of their mama when she walks across the stage. :yelclap: :yelclap: :yelclap: (those are your kids clapping for you)

I have 3 children ages 1,7and 11. I am scared I will not be able to spend time with them if I enrol in the RN program. I still have alot of general educational classes to do. Although being a nurse has been a dream of mine for many years I wonder if I can make it. Money in in my household is very tight, jobs are few and babysitters are hard to come by. I will be starting classes agin in January and wonder if it is best to start off as a LPN.

I could never do it with three children, yet there is a woman in my 2nd year class who just had a baby and has 4 kids at home. Go figure. You probably can figure out if you can do it, but unless you have good child care, your kids will suffer. Just remember there are tons and tons of studying, paperwork, etc. to be done not during classes and clinicals. You've go to have child care when you're doing this, too. Bless you if you try, but believe me, not many of us could pull this off. I'm sure the woman in my class has lots of help.

hey i wanted to write to tell you that i have two children ages 17 months and 5 years old and i find the time to spend with them the funny things is i feel like ihave more tiome now that i really enjoy what i am doing, i say wade it our, it took me 4 years to get my gen eds out of the way and now i feel like i am finally where i am suppose to be. My advice is it is worth it and your children will thank you in the future. :wink2: :thankya:

I just have one child, but decided to just go for it, and now I graduate in December! It goes by fast. You can work part time as a student for extra money, and there are so many loans available. I will have SO much in debt from loans to help pay for child care, but I'm glad I did it and those loans will be paid off one day. Try to meet some mothers in your pre-req classes going for RN also, and maybe you can work out a schedule to help each other out babysitting. Good luck!
