I'm terrified of needles! I had to have a tetorifice shot yesterday and I just shook the whole time...the ladies at my school's clinic had a riot with the fact that I'm studying to be a nurse but I get dizzy and faint-ish when I get a shot.

needles: tis better to give than to receive!!

I know how you feel PreRN Katie! I am not a needle fan.... but I made up my mind I am going to do what I have to! My friends and family tell me all the time that there is no way I can be a nurse because I hate needles and the sound of someone vomiting! It is hard to hear, but I tell myself everyday that the only way to get over my fears is to confront them head on and I am not going to let a silyl fear stand between me and my RN title!

Good Luck to you, not that you are going to need it! :heartbeat

I defianately do not like them but I wouldn't say I'm scared of them.

I always get a kick out of pts w/mulitple tatoos and piercing tell me thay are afraid of them though. Aside from that, I have to say I feel badly for alot of recovering addicts. Those that are truly committed to their sobriety develope quite a fear of needles and do sometimes need alittle support with injections and such. I had one tell me the thought of a needle, any needle "brings me back to those days and I don't ever want to go there again." She came back for another baby 2 yrs later and is still clean! I was her nurse for her second baby too and was so proud of her!:)

I am one who is afraid of the pointy end. When I was a child at the dentist, he tried to pull a loose baby tooth but it was hurting. He said he could make it not hurt, and did something out of my sight. Then he told me to close my eyes and open my mouth, and next thing I knew my mouth was on fire. This was before lido was buffered.

Since then I freak out if I can't see the needle coming. I'll take shots in my arm or IVs till the cows come home, but I won't take them in my butt or close my eyes at the dentist. The first thing I tell dentists the first time I see them is "Don't ever tell me to close my eyes!"

which is worse for you guys, blood drawn or shots?

shots for me

Any needle from the neck up scares the crap out of me! I have to have 2 Valium 10's AND gas before I get novocaine at the dentist (needless to say, my husband has to take the day off when I need a mouth procedure!). Same goes for the eye doctor - never had a needle in the eye, but cannot stand it - totally freaked when I had Lasik!

Neck down, I'm okay as long as getting blood gas (arterial, I guess? Sorry, I'm still a student...) isn't involved (PAIN LIKE I'VE NEVER FELT on that one and I've been through many a long hospital stay involving surgeries!). I even handled NG tube insertion better than the needle in the underside of my wrist!

I only hope I'm good on the giving end, God willing!

shots for me

Shots, hands down. I've got four tattoos, have had multiple piercings in the past, and have NO problem with IVs or blood draws. Phlebotomists are always weirded out because I stare right at my arm when they stick me. I think it's kinda cool. But come at me for an IM shot? I deliberately hyperventilate and get as anxious as possible because then there's no way it can be as bad as I'm anticipating. There's just something so much more invasive about an IM injection.

Interestingly, I HATE giving IM shots as well. I almost never have to give injections (just vax) but shoving even a 25g needle into a teeny baby leg? Yeeeeeesh. Hate.

Thank you and good luck to you too! Don't let anything stand in the way of your dream!

I would much much rather have a shot than have my blood drawn though. There's just something freaky about having my blood drain out of my body...I swear I can feel it!:D I have 7 tattoos and I always try really hard to cover them up whenever I'm going to get an injection/blood drawn. It's hard to explain that you're a weenie about needles when you're covered in ink. It's just not the same thing!
