I am sort of new to allnurses.Yesterday I posted a thread just simply asking what the difference is between RN and LVN schooling.The response I got sadden me because I thought everyone took it too personal.I KNOW we are all nurses, obvisouly, but there is a difference.Why is everyone in the medical field so touchy about there job? Everyone acts like they are better than everyone else. When I went to EMT school, the firemen, emt's, and paramedics and nurses thought that they were God.THERE NOT! There is so much competition and pettiness in this profession, it is disgraceful.When I attended nursing school, everyone did not like me.One student took me aside and told me that my problem was that I was too nice.TOO NICE? They also thought that they were better than me because of that.If I was like them, I should have been a snob to them because my husband is a general contractor and makes over $200,000 a year. I don't need to work.The only reason I want to work is because I am tired of staying at home. I don't have kids and I am 40 years old. Everyone, just chill!!!!!Nobody is better then anyone else.We all know are place in the medical field.Get off you high horse and come down to reality!!!! In fact, doctors are a lot nicer than any nurses I found, LVN'S or RN's.They should be acting like snobs and being petty like us because they give the orders.They are a lot smarter than all of us put together and they have the final say so. I went and looked at the responses you received from you other post. They were all polite and no one flamed you -- at least none that were posted by the time I am writing this. I don't understand why they upset you. You seem to be looking for negativity where little exists.

I too took a look at the thread you are talking about and I don't see any negativity - only pointing out that LVN's and RN's are nurses.

School is hard either way - I think we all learn essentially the same stuff.

Erenteria, Reading your post makes me feel sad for you. The people that answered you were kind. I feel a lot of anger coming from you and wonder about where your self esteem lies. I think nurses are a wonderful bunch of people..."thought they were God...we know our place, get off your high horse." If this is really the way you feel you're going to have a hard time in nursing.

I will answer your question though. I started out as an LVN because I didn't really know if I wanted to be a nurse. It was a tough program and a lot was expected of us. I then worked a year and went through an advanced placement RN course.

As we were being taught in RN school sometime my jaw would drop because I realized how much I had learned about the basics in LVN school but didn't know the rationale behind them. It was an eye opener.

So, both programs were difficult as one was preparation for the next. In RN school I realized how much I didn't know.:balloons:

Good luck to you in school! I think most of us do a pretty good job of getting along and working together as a team, but I'm sure there are exceptions.

EMS can certainly turn into a bit of a hierarchy. I think it's partly due to the vastly different educational requirements between certification levels.

Whether in EMS or nursing, I hope that you are able to enjoy your work, follow in the footsteps of the people who set good examples, and avoid those who are negative or condescending.

Hold the lecture because I think you are way off base with your response.

It seems you have a slightly negative view of nursing and if you only want to just "get out of the house" why would you pick such a field that causese you such stress? There's plenty of other less stressful ways to spend time if you're bored. LVN school is as tough and demanding as nursing school is.

As a mod, I'm hestitant to allow this thread to continue because it's so negative, and I'm fearing it's going to take a negative slant if you take it the wrong way, but we'll see.

I understand the need to vent, and this is a great place to do it because there are a TON of great people on this board. Most are nurses, but there are a lot of people on here that are different types of professionals.

I looked at your other thread too, and I didn't see any negativity. I did see where you had asked if LPNs had to know all the meds RNs did, and the answer is yes. Different states have different scopes of practice for the LPN. Some are very broad, and others very narrow. However, LPNs are definately responsible for knowing about medications. As an LPN, I did have to give many PO meds, also IV meds, injectables, transdermals, topicals, etc. Also, different specialites/areas of nursing generally have their own common meds. Generally in school you learn the basic pharmacology and classes of meds and in the workplace you must know about any med you give to a patient. I hope that helps a bit.

I see where you had to drop out of school due to an accident. I hope you're doing better now. Having been through both LPN and RN programs, I would have to say the RN is a bit more intense, but the LPN is still very rigorous and I would say the hardest part of the LPN program is the fact you must learn so much in a year's time. As an LPN, we touched on all the aspects I learned in RN school, but some areas were not as intense. We spent more time in Med-Surg, and Geriatrics, because in my area, that's where most LPNs work.

When I come to the part of your post which I quoted above, I cringed. I know you sound incredibly frustrated and upset. But I hope you know there ARE great nurses out there, and that means LPN and RN alike. However, nursing is an independent profession. Many things nurses do are done independently of an MD/DO. Yes, we do take their orders, but the nurse is responsible for the patient and making sure the MD doesn't make a mistake in the orders they give. We also take orders from a LOT of people who AREN'T physicians. Like the CNS, NP's, PA's, PT, OT, etc. The whole point of healthcare is to help the patient. That requires a lot of different disciplines. Nurses are the ONLY people that are with the patient 24/7 during their stay in a facility. People are admitted for NURSING care, not PHYSICIAN care. The point is that we ALL must work together to help the patient. The physician is not the ultimate person in charge. If you haven't found ANY nurses that are nice in your area, I wonder how many you found. Yes, there are nurses who are mean/angry, etc, but they are PEOPLE first. It's not the fact that they are nurses that they're "mean". There are just as many docs, NP's, PT's, OT's, etc who aren't nice too. The first time you get screamed at on the phone by an irate MD maybe you'll understand.

And, as for the last comment of yours, I hope you know that I have met MANY nurses who are JUST as smart, if not smarter, than any MD I've met in my years of nursing. If you think nurses are stupid, than why do you want to be one yourself?

I 1st off have to say I am HURT by you saying we were "rude" I responded to you thread & thought I was pretty nice, but your NEW thread was pretty rude.

I have to say that MOST of us worked very hard to get into NURSING school & it is a very STRESSFUL but REWARDING time in our lives.

It KILLS me that people take nursing school sooo lightly & chose to do it for the money, getting out of the house, or any other silly things!

I want to be a nurse because I have a fire in my that I think can turn into a passion & help people.

Your lack of education shows in your grammar - the word is "their" when referring to people, not "there". So why do I mention that? Because your post sounds like you are jealous of others who have more education and being paid more. Petty jealousies are a waste of time. We should act like a team and remember that every team member has a contribution to make, regardless of their background.
