Returning to nursing after 3 years

Published

Hi all! I graduated from lpn school in 2013, and haven't worked as a nurse since 2013. Has anyone returned to nursing after years off? How did you get back into it? I applied to get my license reinstated, figured that would be my first step. And started reading to refresh myself. Thank you.

I am not, nor have I been in a similar situation to yours, but I wanted to wish you good luck on your journey back into nursing.

Hey, I, myself is getting ready to start working, with no experience what so ever. I graduated in 2012. I'm trying to see if I can do some volunteering, but idk how to go about it in Richmond Virginia, I'm recently move here. Good luck to you

Please if it did work out, share the process please

I'm sorry I didn't realize this post was old

You need to check with your governing body. In my province, if you haven't worked 1300 hours in three years, you need to take a refresher course

Thank you, and good luck to you as well!!

Yeah, I think a refresher course is a good idea. But where I'm at its not required. I just had to complete 20hrs of CE and pay a fee to get my license reinstated.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Trach Care, Diabetes.

I stepped out of nursing in 2011, but I just kept renewing my license. No CEU's are required in my state (crazy!) I just re-entered nursing in January of this year. I did do several CEU's on my own because after all lives are in our hands and when we don't use knowledge we have learned we tend to lose it. It did take me about 4 months to find a job nursing again. Interviewers frowned upon the gap in my job history. I hate to say LTC is your best option. That is who accepted me. I know it was because they were desperate! But I do love my patients/residents and am developing my skills again. I plan on doing six months here and updating my resume and hope I can land a job that doesn't revolve around med passes!

Thank you...so you didn't do a refresher course? How long was your training? I wanna do a refresher course, but they're so expensive.

Hello. I myself is getting back to nursing after 7 years. Never worked as a nurse after graduating in 2009. Just took the NCLEX for the first time in September 2015, didn't pass. Took it again early this year and PASSED it! I reside here in TX and still in the process of endorsing over my license from HI to TX, I have a strong feeling the TX BON is going to require me to take a refresher course though.

I wish you the best of luck in getting back to the nursing field :)

been graduate almost 5 yrs and TX WANTS me to do refresher course

Did you take the refresher course? Where did you take it? How was your experience?
