Relocating to Boston, MA

Published

I currently have my BSN and have been full time in Med/Surg for a little over a year in North Carolina. My husband is pursuing college in Boston, and is anticipating starting in the spring. We are looking to move in January. As I need to find a job prior to moving I am looking for some input on when I should start applying for jobs, and which hospitals are recommended? I appreciate any help, thank you!

The "major" academic hospitals in town are Mass General Hospital, Brigham & Women's, Beth Israel Deaconess, Children's Hospital of Boston, Tufts Medical Center, and Boston Medical Center. They may be hard to get a job at (even with experience) without a contact on the inside. Good luck, welcome!

Where are you planning to live? The job market is VERY tight around here so you may have to look outside of the major teaching hospitals with the coveted positions.

We are definitely considering all areas around Boston as well, I know that a lot of smaller hospitals are located in the surrounding locations. I am really interested in when I should begin the application process, as I see many positions are online but are most likely looking to be filled immediately.

If you're not moving until January, it's probably too soon to begin applying. I'd start looking around September or so. Explain in your cover letter that you will be relocating and when you anticipate being available to start.

Look at some of the smaller hospitals in the Boston and the immediate suburbs if you're thinking of living in the city: Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plain, St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Brighton, New England Baptist Hospital, Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Beth Israel satellites in Milton and Needham and Quincy Medical Center in Quincy, MA.

Thank you very much, that is very helpful!

A little further out......There is Emerson Hospital In Concord....nice hospital (east of Boston on route 2 and ORNAC-Old road to nine acre corner....LOL). Beverly Hospital in Beverly...also nice hospital (north shore) and Salem Hospital (community hospital that does open heart)...Melrose/Wakefield(Mel/wak) in melrose...Anna Jaques, Newburyport. Addision Gilbert Gloucester. North east......Lowell General, Lowell MA, Saints Memorial, Lowell/busy places. Lawrence Memorial, Medford MA.... Lawrence General, Lawrence MA....besides The Lahey Clinic Burlington MA...east of Boston/large teaching affiliate.

These are all about 40 miles circumference...there are a few more but that is about it for now.

Hi Esme12,

I am a new grad living in the greater Boston area and I'm at my wits end trying to find a job. I've applied to many, if not all, of the hospitals you've mentioned here with no response. Do you have any tips/tricks for getting noticed by these guys? I'm sorry to intrude but you really seem to know your stuff so I figured it couldn't hurt to ask!

They are in no hurry to hire where are you coming from? Are you an RN? ADN or BSN?

North Shore, South Shore hospitals also. I'd steer clear of Quincy.

I know this post is a few months old, but just want to be geographically correct--Emerson & Lahey are actually northwest of Boston, heading toward the Merrimack Valley area :nurse:
