Reading Tips

Hello all im in my first semester of the nursing program at WCCCD and there is an awful LOT of reading to be done. Just wondering if some current or former RN students have any tips or helpful suggestions for completing and understanding the reading material. Thanks in advance.:specs::specs:

I often read items aloud, regardless of length (drink water), and take notes for class material, seems to triple my exposure but i'm afraid it won't help you cut the material down at all - but if remembering is your goal, I find it's useful.

I know what you mean about the reading :D oy!

What helps me is to write down everything I know about the particular subject after I study, when studying interventions, I always study what I'd do first, then second, because it's not uncommon for all of the answers on a test question to be correct, you just have to pick the MOST correct answer. That took me a LONG time to understand. When studying pharm (drugs) I always study min&max dosage, action, class, therapeutic range, side effects, nursing implications and most importantly WHY my patient is taking it. Hope this helps. Welcome to Nursing.

Thanks Steph and congratulations on being almost finish in May.

hi brandi! welcome to a new life. ;)

in the beginning i would always read the fundamentals book first & continued to always look there for info before reading iggy. kozier was much easier for me to understand. i also read the summary & key points first so i know what to focus on. and always keep in mind your job as the nurse. always study the boxes, italics & nurse's alerts (in red). and i read at the computer so i can google all these new words i am still encountering. (it’s much easier than flipping books around!) i hope this helps a bit.

this 1st 7.5 wks is mostly memorization, if i recall. there are so many new terms & techniques. for me, practice outside of class was very important.

as for the drugs, i now sort them by classification & then list the drugs on that card as i come across them w/safe dose & things as lotus described. once you know the class, you study the action & side effects & what it’s used for. i wish i would have done that off the bat because i was so overwhelmed at first. i know this will help you when you get into clinical. ;)

good luck! 7 wks & you go live!!!
