Specialties MICU

i was wondering if any of you have some recommendations or specific reading material you found to be helpful (there is so much out there)...

i am a new grad, beginning an sicu residency program next month. i would love to be a step ahead of the game if possible.

thanks!

I too am about to start a residency as a new grad in the ICU. I just ordered the AACN critical care book called Essentials of Critical care, it looks pretty good!

Hey,

I'm a fellow new grad starting in SICU. I worked med-surg for 5 months and was fortunate enough to find a facility eager to train me :) I've spoken with my resource nurse on a few different occasions and these are what she recommended to me:

1) Notes on ICU Nursing: FAQ Files from the MICU: Second Edition by Mark Hammerschmidt

Thus far, I'm a third of the way into the MICU book, and I really like it. Its formatted like a preceptor talking to you the preceptee (is that even a word? ha) Everything is broken down pretty well, and its way less dry than any textbook I've ever read. Cost less than $30 including S&H

2) The CD's for CCRN review on this website www.greatnurses.com

These were very highly recommended, but I haven't bought them just yet. I'll get around to it, but the $150 price tag is a bit expensive.

3) Podcasts by Jeffrey Guy, M.D. called ICU rounds

I've listened to a couple of these and they're pretty good. Just type his name into iTunes and you'll see it pop up. Best of all they're free!

and lastly she recommended,

4) Attend as many Critical care courses I can especially during my first year.

Good luck!

Those CCRN review CD's are amazing. I actually heard Dr Gaspari in person at a CCRN review last year and she makes ICU incredibly easy to learn and extremely fascinatinG!!

Wow, great info! thanks to all of you!

Specializes in Critical Care, ER.

i've been in the icu for just over a year now. i have my aacn "essentials of critical care nursing" book next to me as we speak. sometimes i bring it to work. a lot of the times i will read through it when i get home to review something a patient of mine may have had that day.

thanks to bittybritty for the podcast idea.

I second ICU FAQ's by Mark Hammerschmidt.

The Manual of Critical Care Nursing is also an excellent book. I have the older edition, but here is a link to the newer one on Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Manual-Critical-Care-Nursing-Interventions/dp/0323063764/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312729538&sr=8-1

I have not had a chance to look at the newer edition, but the older one is very thorough, easily fits into my bag and has all of the nursing diagnoses with interventions/rationales. The only downside is that there really aren't any visuals in the older edition except for the heart rhythms, so if you're a visual learner keep that in mind. Not sure about the newer edition.

I am trying to find out if these DVD's are compatible with MAC. I actually just got off the phone w/ customer service and the representative said "she thinks so..." She also said that they really don't do returns... so, I would like to make sure they will play on MAC before I go ahead and order.

Anyone know for sure? Thanks!

this is for micu....but there's a lot of helpful info....loveeeeee this site!!! and there's a book you can buy also

Specializes in Trauma/Tele/Surgery/SICU.

I too just started in a SICU after 2 years in med surg on a trauma/surgery floor. I have three books that I really like: The essentials of critical care nursing, Tarascon Internal medicine and critical care pocketbook and quick reference for critical care. I also have the ICU book, but I haven't really used that one too much yet. I LOVE icufaqs.org! My educator recommended Hemodynamics made incredibly easy but I haven't bought that one yet. I am finding it hard just to keep up with the ones I already have on top of all the information I received from my educator. I have 2 giant binders of material from them as well as a medication guide!

One thing I would like to get is a book about recovering open hearts. I would love any recommendations!

HI, I just passed the nclex and I read all your comments. Does anyone know where i can apply for an RN residency program or hospitals hiring new RN's? Thanx...

And since I just passed, I wanna work as soon as possible. But the hospitals and their job openings are always asking for 1yr or 2yrs minimum experience requirements and its making me so frustrated not to find a job. How can I get an experience if no one wants to hire new RN like me.

Please help me if someone know a job opening. thanx in advance.
