Where any of you LVNs
CNAs before you became a LVN?
If so... Did you work while going to school as a LVN?

Some states require you to have a C.N.A before becoming a nurse now!

I'm a new LPN..I live in MD. Before I started the LPN program I had been a CNA for 2 yrs. I think it helped a lot w/ the basic skills, and also to expose me to the healthcare field. I worked up until my last semester, b/c at that point I had failed a class :-( and was on probation status. Didn't want to take a chance of failing out of the program all together.
My question is .. Where you a CNA before you because a LVN?
Did you work as a CNA while going to school for your LVN?

I was an CNA in acute care before LVN....and no, I did not work while I was in school at all.
Is your question (?) about working as CNA while in nursing school
or if it is relevant or helpful to what you will learn in nursing program? I do think it is necessarily helpful.
Maybe finding a home health position evenings where you can concentrate on your studies..that would be awesome, I know
others who did. :-) Best to you !

I worked as an NA(nurse's aide only; there wasn't certification back then) before nursing school. I feel it helped tremendously.

I was a cna before I was an lpn and yes I worked as one during nursing school. I feel every nurse should work as a cna before becoming a nurse so they understand how physically demanding and difficult that job is. When I worked in LTC, I could always pick out the nurses that never worked as a cna, they were USUALLY (not all) the nurses that refused to help their aide lift, put a patient on the toilet and just generally treated the aides horribly.

I worked as a PCP in a psychiatric hospital while going to school for LPN but very part time. I worked sometimes only 2 shifts per month, enough to keep my job. I was a CENA however my job didn't require being one. My heart is in psych and after working 8 years in Assisted living as both a CENA and a Med Tech I became burned out with the elderly population. It did serve me well though. I think every nurse should experience LTC and be a CENA before a nurse so they understand the stress of the job and have compassion. I think it would make them stronger nurses.

i worked as a CNA for 18 years before going to LPN school. I personally feel every nurse should work as a CNA first. I continued to work through school but only worked every other weekend and went to school part time in the evening. My children were 1 and 3 at the time, thank goodness i had a wonderful and supportive husband!!
