questions about nursing

Published

I am a new nursing student just starting my pre-reps. I am looking for a job as a tech in an ER. I volunteered in a trauma center for about 6 months and got lots of experience as far as being in the environment and getting used to the way a ER runs. However, as a new nurse, will it be overwhelming to start out in the ER? My passion is ER, especially trauma. Can some experienced nurses give me some advice??? Thanks.

Unless you have connections or get lucky, you usually (not always) won't start out right in the ER.

If you want advice from experienced nurses, post this in the ER nursing forum.

Good luck!

Where I live, you don't get an RN job in the ER right out of school. You will need to have a strong nursing foundation before moving over to the ER and that would include some experience in ICU.

I'm not an experienced nurse but if you want my observation anyway.... it happens sometimes. It did so to the tech I volunteer with/under. Of course, she is totally, outstandingly amazing. Another factor might be that this hosplital does not get a lot of trauma.

One of her coworkers was also hired by ER as a new grad. I don't know her as well and don't know all the details. It was a different hospital that has a long-established program for this. She said it will be many months before she actually works in ER. She will spend six (or nine? I forget) months in other departments first. I think she said there was additional, specific training as well.
