I'm an RN working in critical care, and I'm losing my sight. My vision can be corrected with glasses (expensive ones) now, but my doctor says not for much longer (a few years or so). I've also been told laser surgery is not an option. I'm wondering what kind of field I could start merging into if I become legally blind. I'd like to get any education I need now and establish myself before this happens. Any ideas?

You could consider becoming a nurse educator or instructor in nursing school?

Are you in an area that offers support services? They may be able to point you in the right direction. Good Luck.

Each state has a Federation for the Blind that networks with the state Workforce (unemployment) office. Talk to them NOW as they may have advice you can use right away. They can do training for various jobs and recommend visual aids, grant money, equipment--- all sorts of things. Even if they do not provide the "stuff" they know who does.
Consider working with insurance companies. That is phone work + computer. You may find that a computer is available for your impairment. GOOD LUCK

What about medical transcription? I am so sorry you are having to go through this. Good luck and blessings.

Telephone triage might be a future career option, especially when taking your acute care background and experience in critical care into consideration. I have also known college professors who are legally blind.
I'm lucky my job will pay for me to go back to school to get my master's degree. I'll look into the Federation for the Blind as well. Thank you all for your advice!
