  3. Vicks is your friend. I think the Vicks definitely works better than Mentholatum. Caught on to the Vicks when I was doing EMS and went on a found dead, laid there dead for 2 days. It has come in quite handy in the ER.

I am going to present this from the other side. I have been very overweight the majority of my adult life, dealt with and treated for an eating disorder. It is not always fear of change or looking for a quick fix to lose weight when people do things like this (I will agree that sometimes it is). It can be DESPERATION, feeling that you have tried everything else and you will do anything to lose weight because you are so miserable and think you have no way out. When you get to that point you will try ANYTHING even though you know that it is wrong to make yourself feel better. (you are talking to someone who drove their potassium down to 2.8 doing something similar). Try living in a world that is very judgemental about appearance. Bathrooms that are too small, having to buy old lady clothes because that is all that is in your size, try having people assume that you are poor or on welfare because of your weight. Add all of that on top of how you feel about yourself and tell me how desperate you would feel. These people need our support, and KIND education, not assumptions and judgement. Fortunately I have been able to get ahold of it and have lost a significant amount of weight. As far as the OP, I think the side effects are alcohol intoxication and irritation of the mucosal lining of the intestine. This is very scary to me that this information is out there for people to see. I wish I knew how to deal with desperate patients, I just try to understand where it comes from due to my personal experiences and try to support and educate.

Oh, toucy subject with me. Our security is our maintenance department and 2 cameras. We are totally isolated in our ER, the rest of the staff may not know that we are having a problem. During the evenings and night, my department is very vulnerable. I have repeatedly asked for a panic button or something--we are very small, but since the first of the year, we have had several incidents that could have easily resulted in a nurse injury. I am the manager of our department and have done as much education about safety, keeping yourself between the patient and the door, etc, but I am not satisfied with that. I have approached administration many times, we are told, call maintenance in. I don't think that they understand that sometimes you cannot get to the phone to call for help. Unfortunately I agree, that it may take a serious incident for someone to listen to me.
  10. Drove a Taxi, worked in bars, waitressed and bridge construction.
  11. We are not to computerized charting yet, but a good rule of thumb is never leave anything blank, N/A or get the info. I agree with everyone else, don't set yourself up!!
  12. JSSR- Jerry Springer Show Rejects SBATR- Shouldn't be allowed to Reproduce
  13. That usually fills my longterm day to day contact need---more than fills it.
  14. eeeewwww!!
  15. Greetings All, I am a nurse manager of a rural ER along with the Outpatient clinic. I started as a floor nurse and was able to develop this position as well as my department. The ER is thriving and we have actually contributed to overhead for the last 2 years!! I am very proud of my department and have the best nurses in the world working with me. I have been in management for 3 years. I have learned alot, but boy I sure have alot to learn!!!! I have a great role model with my CNO, she has been an excellent mentor.
  16. And I thought I was the only one.
  17. This thread is not for the weak of stomach. :)
  18. We used to have contests when we were kids to see who could get the largest piece.
  19. What thing do you think is really cool that every one else thinks is really gross? I love it when we lance a big sebaceous cyst. I think it is so cool when all of that gunk comes out. Now, I don't want to touch it, I just like to watch. Totally gross huh.
  20. I also work prehospital, and I work with an EMT who we have to make sure isn't at the bottom of the stretcher, because sometimes the feet roll out and rest against his arms. He will turn pale, break into a sweat and about pass out.
  21. LOL. I like the term sympathetic vomitter!!!! Is it the vomit or the gag that gets you?
  22. Let me make sure that I have this right, you are a nurse, and someone who is not a nurse and works in an office is telling you how to do your job?
  23. Hi, I am new here!!! What I want to know is what gets to you? I think we all have something that just really makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up when you have to take care of it. I can't stand FINGER INJURIES!!!!!!!!! It just makes me cringe to see them. I would rather take care of an amputated limb than a mangled finger.
  24. I am the manager of a small ER (rural). I welcome new grads, but have found that most of the time the transition from directly from nursing school to ER is difficult. Here are my suggestions: 1. You do no one (other nurses or patients) any favors by not asking for help if you are not sure. 2. Find the best in each nurse and emulate them. 3. Take steps toward independence, when you are comfortable (are any of us really comfortable :wink2:) take the initiative towards the next step. 4. Practice your basic nursing skills. These shouldn't be a question. 5. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and learn from it. Sometimes criticism hurts, but sometimes we don't know we are wrong, or could do it better unless someone tells us. 6. Make yourself part of the team!!!! Teamwork is essential in ER. 7. Learn from your mistakes--we all make them, and own up to them when we do. 8. Be assertive, not aggressive. 9. Understand that ER is not glamorous. 10. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!
