Eisenhower hospital palm springs, ca
I did a 13 weeker at Eisenhower late last year in the ED. They had begun a HUGE expansion in the EDprojected to last 2 years,15,000sq/ft to 55,000sq/ft. Lotsa noise , lotsa dust.As far as the work, all trauma goes to Desert Medical Center, or JFK. As far as their systems are concerned, forget ratios, it's all on paper for the state. Traveler friendly? Uhhhh nope very cliquish, you will work your ass off , forget help from Charge Nurses, they butt sit, and gab with their GF's, ESP on nights. When I left they had about 40% of staff:travelers. Housing is awesome lotsa Gated Condos, But there ya go...

How crazy is this??...no contract
I just got off the phone with the Big EE company, and they tried the same things with me, threats, "I have to reimburse them for housing",which BTW I havent even been in because I refused the assignment(and quit the company)The reason I quit?, because they tried to smoke me with an email contract, which didn't have agreed language re: car rental reimbursement.they never got me the written contract in time,I got tired of waiting, and refused and quit. I have been screwed by this company before, insurance, bonus money and minor details like deducting my child support payments. And I have been traveling for a while and been a nurse for 28 years

Nursing with a Southern Accent
Having been a travel nurse and worked all over the country,I consider my Southern Heritage a badge of Pride. Because I have worked all over the place, my "Twang" is often hidden. In the rare occasion, I lose my temper, it can come slipping out. I have just finished an assignment in Boston, where working in a busy Trauma ER,I was complemented on my skills by my Manager. During a busy psych admit , I had to assist the police with restraints, and I was bitten, and then it popped out, "Dayuuum, at's gonna hurt". One would have thought I just spit on someone, all eyes were on me. Then the comments began , "Where ya'll from boy??? want some grits?I just let them roll off like water off a duck's back..But they continued, so on my next shift, I came to work dressed like Larry the Cable Guy, liberally peppering my speech with "Git er done", Boy Howdy, Yesssiree Bob"More than one person, said , "That really makes you sound stupid". I changed back into my scrubs, and came back out to work, and asked them, Now what's different????.My skills?????.Embrace your heritage, celebrate your differences, do not tolerate ignorance, educate it out of existence. CoonAss by birth, Southern by geography,Damn good Nurse by training and hard work.

Criminal Record
Most State Boards of Nursing have appeal and examination procedures regarding criminal convictions. Research, Talk to the Boards, we here in California have the procedures to get past DUI's etc. God knows we bend over backwards to rehabilitate Nurses that are addicted to meds , and are caught stealing them from work. DON'T give up use the systems that are available,Stick to it,, Good luck to you

Has anyone done this? Became a Paramedic first and then an RN? Is it a good idea ?
Having been a Paramedic and now an RN for going on 26 years, you would be asset to both professions, having seen and practiced in both worlds.Working on both sides of the glass doors can only make you a better Healthcare advocate. As far as Managers are concerned, any manager that fosters animosity between her staff and the Medics that work in and out of her ED, is only hurting herself, and ultimately, the patient

What was the MOST ridiculous thing a patient came to the ER for?
Dont choke too long, Ill have to rescue breath ya...:rotfl: At Charity Hospital in New Orleans, where I worked the accident room, I had an elderly black man coming screaming to the Heavens that he had "Spiral Mighty Jesus" in his head, Now having just moved from California this was a shock to me, but having faith I asked him if he wanted to speak to one of the Sisters, when another nurse whispered to me, "Honey He means spinal meningitis.... she left giggling....

What was the MOST ridiculous thing a patient came to the ER for?
After working Triage for 4 hours, I find myself repeating, "Remember, Stupidity is not a crime". The two people that came in with the pt. complaining of severe abd. pain , writhing , moaning, and she needed a room immediately. In my assessment I asked her when her last period was, "Oh they are real irregular"...when was the last time she had a pregnancy test to which she repied...Oh, I dont date Men, she's my partner",Ive never been with a man. I said. OK... (suspicion rising, because of the abd mass that she started complaining about)Her partner sys, "Her abd. has been swelling for a long time". I asked has she seen an MD for it, to which she replied, My doctor told me , I couldnt get pregnant, besides I dont date Men". Long story short, 35 minutes later , Mother and Baby are doing fine, Partner is no where to be seen, , Mother is trying to remember the details from "That party I went to". And Im trying to get an RX for Toradol for my rib splint from laughing so freaking hard. I wonder if it could have been her hygiene spray??? "That's just me, but I could be wrong"
