University of Calgary Nursing Transfer January 2017
I've applied for a line of credit with the Bank of Montreal. I would call up and look into the banks before applying, don't go for RBC. They seem to have a higher rate added onto prime after you graduate. CIBC is the lowest rate (I think), if you are looking into banks that are accessible in Alberta :) jwillis1- maybe look into registering for a car2go membership for now? That way, you will at least be able to access a car with out having to purchase/rent one and the fee when driving them is super cheap. The only caveat is that after you park and go into somewhere, the car can be reserved and used by another member in the area. If you live out towards tuscany or ranchlands, you will have a very long commute every day, back and forth. The public transportation here is decent, but it is so so slow and the buses... avoid the busses if you can and try to be closer to the train stations. Usually, if you can't find studios or 1 rooms that are affordable, there tend to be a lot of basement rentals that seem decently priced! Hope this helps

Appalachian State University (BSN) Nursing Program
I didn't get my BSN there, but I did get my first degree in advertising there and I can say that I loved attending school at App State. Just the overall atmosphere of where the school is located and the surrounding community is really awesome. Not all of the classes are huge either, which enables you to build strong relationships within classes. I have heard that the nursing program is good from others before and I think you should go ahead and apply there or visit the campus one weekend and just speak with faculty about the program. Boone is a wonderful city and App State is one of those hidden gems of the public universities out there.

Nursing Admissions: A Frustrated Student's Manifesto
What school have you continuously been applying to? I applied to the Uni of Calgary's accelerated program as a degree holder and got in first try. The application was solely based on your overall GPA from the pre reqs and most recent 10 courses transferable. Higher grades help just because so many people apply, but nothing more. I think it would be wise for you to stop seeking reasons to degrade nursing programs as a whole when you've only attempted applying to one. You're just narrowing the options and creating a negative experience for yourself.

Monde, you apply for the classes listed in term three. There are 4 classes total that you will have to register for í ½í±í ¼í¿» I just went to have my Mantoux test yesterday and will be going next Friday for two more vaccinations I also have to go to a lab to get hep b blood work done because I lived outside of the country for a while, but the nurse at the wellness center explained everything really well :) Still no application package in the mail, but here's to hoping it shows up very soon! Congrats everyone that's recently gotten the green check!

New and Very Potent Danger for ER and Pre-Hospital Personnel
I'm pretty sure this is what has been circulating around Canada, especially in Vancouver and around Alberta. They give out naloxone kits or something like that for people using or not, just to be safe. It's caused large numbers of overdoses in short periods of time and I believe is nicknamed "green bean" or something along those lines. Hopefully this can be contained or people start to realize how quickly this stuff can kill. There was a story covered a few weeks ago about there being 8 overdoes in one night from one dealer in Vancouver, but this was because cocaine (or maybe heroin), was laced with the carfentanil. Everyone survived because paramedics were able to give them naloxone on site and they all happened within close time/proximity of each other.

Those who have already been notified are told they have 30 days to accept. They are probably waiting for the last 30th day of the last person notified to accept/decline. Does that make sense? haha kind of hard to word it smoothly. For example, I found out on September 15th, so October 15th would be the last day for me to accept/decline. Maybe it will take until the last week of October until they start going through those that are currently on hold?

Transition from ICU to ER
I personally can not speak on account of this, but I can share with you my moms history as a nurse. She spent the first 9 years of her career as an ICU nurse. From what I know, she did enjoy it a lot and it was a huge learning curve for her. When she moved from Canada down to the United States, she switched from ICU to ER. She stayed with the ER ever since and is now the supervisor of an ER. I asked her which she preferred and she said the ER because you are always seeing/experiencing something new and the hours are more predictable. She also mentioned having more patients in ER as a positive; as you mentioned above, having 1-2 patients can be less exhilarating (compared to the ER). With that being said, I think you should go for it! You'll never know if you don't give it a shot and you know what they say; "variety is the spice of life" :)

These are the forms you need to print/read over regarding immunizations required/documented proof of and the n95 fit test requirements.. Required documentation | Faculty of Nursing | University of Calgary I'm not sure how much the fit test costs, but I think they can offer a discount if you state you're a student with UoC and the same goes for the background check, but you have to provide proof of enrollment. I made an appointment with Eisan consulting, located downtown. They list several places that offer the service As for the immunizations, I made an appointment with the SU wellness center and they told me it would be $55 for the visit plus an additional $15 for each shot I needed. I think I just have to get my tuberculosis test (mantoux) and seasonal influenza. I made need to get the hep-b antibody blood test or something like that.. I can't remember the name haha. Most of the vaccines you will def already have... MMR, Td, Polio, Hep B/A, etc. I didn't see any info regarding the color of the shoes.. I'm guessing white/blue or black? But maybe they don't mind about shoes. I did see that you are allowed white/blue only for shirts under the uniform though...

How much you want to spend on living will play a lot into where you choose to live... certain areas that are trendier like Kensington, anywhere around the river or downtown will be a bit costly, but the farther you go out North or South, the cheaper it is. Keep in mind that Calgary is very wide spread, so I would try and look for something near the campus or around the SW. I just made appointments for updating some shots, n95 mask fittings, I will wait for November I think to take a CPR/AED-HCP class, but the costs are slowly building up. I read through the nursing handbook that they have online and it outlines everything that the package will most likely cover. Im going to get my background check done starting in October. It says to have one done, which includes a vector search, within 3 months prior to beginning classes. I also read we need a unicard, which is free and obtained on campus or online that will allow access to certain facilities and what not. I guess the last thing I need to take care of is getting a pair of shoes to wear in clinical settings? Question - where did you guys find out the information regarding the books that will be used in the classes? Thanks!

I just registered today because I still haven't received the package regarding application steps yet. I got accepted on the 15th so I'm guessing it takes a while to get the registration info sent out. I did like Amigone mentioned above though and registered for the same classes. Looks like we will all take the same three classes together and they are all in the same class room. The only one that will vary is the lab, but it's time and location is to be determined. I guess for now I'm just going to wait for the application package before going forward with anything else! here is the link to the courses to register for by term.. What was your hardest prerequisite course?
I took stats and A&P online.. I initially was concerned with stats, but it ended up being way easier than I expected. As long as you read each chapter twice, you shouldn't have a problem. It's really just a series of plugging in numbers via several equations that go in sequential order. The math isn't hard, just long processes. Anatomy is also pretty easy to learn and is all a big memorization game. Physiology on the other hand... you really have to be prepared to focus and motivate yourself to want to learn. Some of the anabolic/catabolic reactions and methods of gas exchanges can get very complex.. and there are just too many to remember them all perfectly by the end of it. I do agree with what another person said earlier in that it's really fascinating when you start making connections and realize how your body interacts internally and externally with everything. A&P is absolutely one of the more valuable classes you can learn from and is extremely applicable to everything else that follows.

Thanks, Amigone! I still have to pay the deposit probably later tonight. And I also need to look into the costs and figure out the loan process as well, but that's just a matter of getting organized and checking off the next "to do" list haha.

University of Calgary Nursing Transfer January 2017
Hey Everyone! I just found out that I was accepted to the January 2017 degree holder program at UofC too My GPA was around a 3.74 so it looks like they are making their way through applications now. I'm super excited and relieved to finally know that this is a for sure thing. Best of luck to everyone still waiting to hear back and congrats to those who have already gotten in :) ... for the status update.. I logged on this morning to check my "to do" list and it showed no holds, so I scrolled down and the yellow triangle was now a green check. It just asked me to accept or decline, and then after selecting accept it notified me that to confirm the acceptance, I just needed to make a deposit. Heads up, the deposit is $500.
