  1. Same as neeniebean, I took my NCLEX on a Friday morning and found out I passed on Sunday morning via the pearson website. My license number, however, was not posted on the BON website until about 6-7 days later (It was finally up on the following Thurs if remembered correctly).
  2. Thank you so much Kolt!!!
  3. Wow thanks for giving us the other side of the story Mother23!! I've only heard nothing but the good and positive things about this critical care program in the past (which I did applied for but they didn't take me :imbar ) and it's good to have other perspectives for other new nurses thinking about applying, and i am sorry your experience was not a good one. However, I just want to point out that your experience is only from the CTICU at LIJ from what i am reading... do you know if that's also the case with the other fellows in other units and hosp (SICU, MICU, CTICU @ Manhasset) ??? I am not sure how long ago was your experience, i mean could things have been different now perhaps (hopefully b/c i know a few classmates/ friends whom are in the program now)? I've heard different things from different people who have been/are in the program.. it could be b/c they are in diff units/hosp, etc. Just curious Mother23, when I applied I went for the SICU @ LIJ and I seem to remember that the CTICU there is connected to SICU, right next to each other with the same manager is that correct?? Thanks~
  4. OH MY.... :uhoh21: That's really hard to take, esp I am also in the process of job searching and now hearing this?! My classmate who graduated with me in Dec'07 JUST got a job in the ICU at NYM in March... I hope she's gonna be okay... I know she have to support her family since her father passed away last year...
  5. Hey Lurdes, Besides Beth Israel (ADN) and LIU (BSN), there are also Adelphi (hmm I think they have both ADN and BSN.. not sure), Molloy (BSN), NYU (BSN) and Columbia (BSN) .... there might be more but this is all i know for NYC
  6. I agree with you Billythekid. Thank you very much!!! and I'll sure let you know also how the interview goes and any additional info i get...by the way i am finally done with nursing school (officially) as of today~!! :balloons::balloons:
  7. Billythekid - WOW thanks for all the detail infos!! And also sorry I thought you'd knew about the salary already because you said you've ready met the ICU manager and I've never been thru these formal interviews before so I thought they might have told you already .. Sorry~ Dun get me wrong, i was wondering because i heard that in NYPresby they give you a lower salary if you join their Nursing residency program (correct me if i am wrong).... so i was wondering if NS is doing the same thing. I am also surprised to learn that there's a third person to see after the ICU manager... wow! Thank you also for the detail breakdowns of the fellowship program...!! Are you gonna consider going for this fellowship program if they hire you? I am still debating about NSUH or NSLIJ... i heard that LIJ has better management then NSUH... not sure if this is true.
  8. Hello Billythekid, Congrats!! So you've been thru the interview and did they want to hire you?? I am also scheduled to have an interview with them about this program in Jan!! I also would love to find out more about this fellowship program. I am surprised they didn't tell you anything more about this fellowship program during your interview?? Anyway, after doing some searching around allnurses.com (I LOVE this site!!) this is what I know so far about this program: You get to pick a specialized ICU of your choice (for me i want the SICU!). It's a one year program consisted of 3 semesters; classrooms for the first 2 months (have to get above 80% to pass all exams), and then they will put us on the ICU unit with a preceptor for another 4 months or so, for the other 6 months i have no idea b/c that's how much i've found out so far and i dunno if anything has changed. (please correct me if i am wrong!) oh and also there's a 24 months committment to work in the ICU. I hope this helps!! and if anyone know more about this program please give some inputs!! Some questions for you Billythekid, since you've already been through the interview, if you dun mind, did they tell you about the salary range for this followship program? I know that their base salary range now is about 62-64K, but i am wondering if they give less if we wnat to go into this followship program? Thanks so much and hope to hear more inputs~!
  9. crossbow: just wondering if you notice that the this thread was dated back in 2004....? so you are right it might not be the case now but maybe it was back in 2004.... good day~
  10. Hello dudette~ I also live in Queens and I wonder if you ever find out anything from NYHQ~? I also sent you a PM :) Thanks for any infos~!!! drizzle
  11. hmm.... Actually I've heard similar things from my friend's program. She graduated from LaGCC and the program told them also that LaGCC nurses are chosen over other new grades b/c they know what they are doing when they graduate, etc etc. I know that LaGCC have 100% NCLEX passing rate and that when my friend graduated (they started from 40 people i believe) there was only handful of them with other students from previous semesters graduating with them. I believe all nursing programs are not easy... and passing NCLEX, which doesn't really quantitate one's competency as a nurse, is just the first step into the real world of nursing; but i agree with chunk, no one wants to go to school with passing rate of 50%... just my 2 cents
  12. Helllo~ I took four of my pre-req at Laguardia CUNY (and one in City tech) as well before going into the nursing program... it took me one fall (3 classes) and a summer (2 classes) to finished....so i started march 06 at LaGCC and was done with all the prereq in summer 06 and i was in the nursing program fall06 and now i am in my second sem in a nursing program. However, since i already had my bach. in psych at that time, like i already mentioned i only needed to take about 5 pre-reqs (all the sciences classes).. so i took 3 classes in spring06 and if i remember correctly i took A+P I, Nutrition in LaGCC and Micro in City Tech... yes i actually went to 2 colleges back and forth that semester to ensure that i can finish everything before fall to get into the program.... it wasn't easy... i mean it's doable but i remember i was so exhausted that semester. Another thing you should note and also was my reason of going to 2 school at the same time back then was because at LaGCC, micro was not allow be taken before A+P I and II was done... so think about it they are making you staying at least 3 semester inorder to finish everything!! (i am not sure if anything have changed since) so, since i didn't want to waste another semester, i went to 2 diff college at that time b/c city tech didn't have that rule.. they let you take anything as long as you paying as non-degreee student (yes it was expensive).... with all that said, what i am trying to tell you is, first of all, if you are taking 4 classes in Fall be prepare you will be pulling your hair out... i am kiddin but close to that point, it's not going to be easy.. and really i would suggest only 3 classes to max your chance of getting the highest grade.. And second of all, ask and make sure if you can take micro and A +P together in the same semester since you wanted to finished within 2 sem... (i really doubt LaGCC will let you do that). so.. if money is not a problem (i spend about 2600 for that spring06 sem at those 2 school for 3 classes) and you dun mind traveling 2 school back and forth.... you *might* be able to make it a summer and a Fall.. but dun be surprise if you need to stay a sem longer since you have at least 6 classes to be done... yes lagcc has 4 semesters in a year, but keep in mind not everything will be offered... you have to plan really well, know what they will offer, know the time and rules.... Sorry this is long........i hope this helps and gooood luck!!
  13. I am only taking Pharm this semester and will be having my first exam coming up soon so I dun have any tips yet to offer... just want to say wow and thanks for all the tips!!! Keep them coming~! :wink2:
  14. Dexter99 thanks for replying!!! just some more questions for you tho if you dun mind.... :roll is that starting salary for day or night? and do they have any tuition payback or debt forgiveness programs, etc available? and i also just found out from someone that after about a year working there the salary can be up to 68000 - 70000 (for nights) already? thanks for the infos~!
  15. stac123, i am sorry to hear your situation, i can't believe that... and yes my friend is a pretty lucky girl then.. did you even get to have an interview before they told you that? ..... plz dun give up! :nuke: one thing i want to point out tho... i am not sure if you knew this but i think since you are an international student usually the hosptial wouldn't even consider an international student if they didn't pass NCLEX yet... meaning you should at least get your license first before applying for jobs, it will increase the chance... my friend spent months to be prepare for the nclex and then got the license before she apply to any hopsitals.... i am sorry i didn't point this out before it wasn't on my mind at that time when i made that suggestion. if you can get a hospital to sponser you that's great but if not LTC is another whole new experience and most imp, a good chance for you to stay here, at least keep yourself legal to be here and wait for the chance to switch to hospital later... :stone i am sorry i didn't get to help you out.... goodluck for the rest of your jobsearch and keep us update!!:nuke:
  16. stac123, did you try Long Island Jewish Medical Center (LIJ - North Shore) in long island?? my friend was an international student and when she graduated she can only find 2 hosiptals that are willing to sponser her and LIJ is one of them, and she got the job and has work there for a year now (still waiting for her greedcard) maybe you can try there. Also there's lots of nursing homes that are willing to sponser if you like long term care... good luck and let us know how it goes!
  17. I am also interested in knowing how much LIJ's starting salary is.... anyone??
  18. VISUAL~ Sorry I was kind of in a hurry last time we talked.... I am really stressed out and tired at that point and also having to get prepare for the finals, etc i just have no time to talk (maybe i do, but i just feel that i dun... that i should be studying instead of chatting, etc )... and ofcourse right now i am sitting here writing you a msg....hehee, not that i have nothing to do i am suppose to be studing for my 2 finals on monday... but i find myself not concentrating so i start wandering around on the internet reading allnurses and here you are! Anyway, yes i totally agree with sammi15 about your first semester here in NYU... lots of group projects and papers and getting used to the exam style..etc, but like sammi15's advice to me, take one day at a time and make sure you studied and do really good in midterms.....i find that helpful since by the end of the semester you'll pretty much be burnt out... like me i have no desire to study for finals but yet i have to.... but doing good in midterms takes off some pressures at least... i know people that are in the borderlines and is much more stressed out then i am in terms of having to get a really really good grade on finals to pass the classes since they didn't do good in midterms. As for clinicals, i am lucky that i had a great clinical instructor (i really recommend her ) but the only drawback is the clinical site is in Blyn, it was a bit harder for me since i live in Queens so it depends. I feel that she taught me sooo much and i feel that i had a great clinical experience this semester! clinical instructor is very imp since i've also heard other students with ohter CI are doing nothing or that they didn't have a great clincal experience, etc. woo i wrote alot but hey i'll definitely give you more details about it after my finals plus 3 days of non-stop sleeping ok?? Happpy Holidays~ P.S. Sammi15 thanks for everything once again and i'll email you later~ good luck with your exams! -drizzle
  19. To mrscurtwkids4, THANKS~!! i've PERRLA in my laptop already and i think it's going to worth it as it has good reviews! =) To Sammi15, thanks for all the replies, sent u a PM and maybe i'll see u around on campus?! =p enjoy the long weekend everyone~:wink2:
  20. thank you all for your replies!!! i feel better yet the same time not because that would mean that i am going to have to buy all the required books since they will be needed thru out the program!!!! ouch....total came out to be around 500 – 600 dollars.... mrscurtwkids4, thanks for the advice for getting the program perrla instead!! do you mind to tell me where i could get this program it sounds promising and helpful!!!:wink2: sammi15, yup they changed the booklist a bit...and thankyou for your advices!! so do u think i should not only get the pda version, but the textbook as well also? as for the drug handbook, how do u think of the lippincott vs. the davis's? how do you like the program so far? i am a bit worried about it since english is my second language; i am just hoping that i can make this thru!! thanks~
  21. i will be attending nyu this coming fall and i my jaw dropped to the floor when i saw the booklist... can anyone that have been thru their first semester (fundamental nursing), esp. ppl that is attending nyu, give some suggestions as to which books are definitely needed?? here's the list: for fundamentals of nursing class required 1) fundamentals of nursing package - (by taylor) 2) study guide to accompany fundamentals of nursing - (by taylor) 3) fluids and electolytes made incredibly easy - (by lww) 4) taylor's clinical nursing skills and nursing process - (by evans-smith) 5) math for meds dosages and solutions - (by curren) 6) lippincott's 2007 nursing drug handbook- (by karch) 7) handbook of nursing diagnosis - (by carpenito-mo) optional 1) lippincott review series fluids and electrolytes - (by paradiso) 2) cultural diversity in health and illness - (by spector) 3) taber's cyclopedic medical dictionary indexed incl - (by taber's) 4) spiritual care: nursing theory, research and pra - (by taylors) required books for other classes: 1) essential of pathophysology, concepts of altered - (by porth) 2) physical examination & health assessment text - (by jarvis) 3) publication manual of the apa - (by apa) 4) nursing research - (by lobiondo-woo) 5) nurses' quick reference to common lab & dia - (by fischbach) also, does anyone suggest getting the bold-typed ones in pda version instead of the actual text? anything elses i should get for my pda that will be helpful for the class or clinical?? any help is greatly appreciated~!!!
  22. tab65, Sounds like you have no problem getting into the nursing program!! good for you and good luck with everything!! Regarding about going into a 2-year ADN instead of BSN?? i think you misunderstood me. As for me i will be attending a 15-months BSN program this fall. note i said "i would rather go to BI IF i were to go for ADN.." and the reason i said that was because i thought you were interested in Adelphi's ADN program so i was just saying i would rather go to BI since the money would be about the same and BI have better reputation. and also everyone's choices is different some might need to go to a 2-year ADN instead of a BSN program because of the tuition differences due to less credits needed for ADN, for example.
  23. hey tab65, I was accepted to Adelphi's 2-year BSN program back in April. I am sure it is not as competitive as BI (someone correct me if iam wrong); I applied several colleges back in Feb/Mar and Adelphi were the very first school to reply me back in early April, but me myself will not be attending there. I am sure if you have GPA above 3.0 you can get in easily... the reason i think they are much easier because they did not require us to take the NLN entry exam like BI does and does not even need recommendation letters (BI needs 2 letters) for the BSN so there's no reason for Adelphi to require them for their ADN program (i didn't even know they have ADN program). However, i would rather go to BI if i were to go for ADN because i think BI has a better reputation. good luck!:nuke:
  24. How did the fitting day go?? after a long consideration i have decided that i will not be attending to BI but to another nursing program. Just wanted to say congrats to all of ya that are attending BI and good luck with the nursing journey!! Best wishes~ To Barbara, May I ask you a question? I also wanted to tell BI that I will not be attending and do not wish to hold up a spot, like you said, someone is waiting on the list but since I do not have an option to decline with my acceptance letter to mail back, do i just write my only decline letter to BI?? thank you and congrats and good luck to you!!
  25. Finally made up my mind.... ~Will be attending New York University - College of Nursing this fall for my BSN~:heartbeat
