  1. I was wondering if anyone has come across a patient before who had a hemoglobin drop by 70g/L post op, with only a 0.04 change in Hct? I cannot figure out what may be the cause of this, as post-op bleeding would cause a larger drop in Hct (more correlated to a drop in hemoglobin).
  2. I am attempting to convert my littmann classic III's pediatric diaphragm into a bell, but the diaphragm will not come off. I had no problems when I tried to remove the adult side, but the pediatric side will not budge! Any tips for getting it off? My nails break every time I try to roll it off.
  3. I have been offered a Littmann Cardiology III (or IV-my choice) as a gift. I am a student. I have heard that the Cardiology models are great, but a little difficult to learn on, since you can hear so many sounds that you don't necessarily know about as a beginner student. Can anyone shed some light on this? Because it's a gift, the price does not matter to me, so if it's just a price thing, I will stick with the better model, but if there are reasons to go with the lower model (the Classic III), I would love to hear them. Also, I've heard a lot about "stethoscope theft" at the hospitals, and that they love to "grow legs and walk away." Any insights on preventing that?
  4. A little confused about this. Did you get your review done in Ontario happy_gal? I am wondering if it's that slow at UBC health services, because I won't be able to get my review in BC until right before school starts, like beginning of September.
  5. I am wondering whether or not it would be a security issue for me to have my full name engraved onto my stethoscope. I am a new student, so I am still not sure how identification works. Will people be able to see my full name on an ID tag anyway, or is that kept private? With the internet in this day and age, an upset client could find out a lot of information using a nurse's full name is my primary concern.
  6. I think it would be breaking confidentiality to answer that, because it would tell people whether or not there are MMI style questions in the interview Sorry!
  7. I thought of another opportunity for busy moms. My mother used to take me with her to volunteer at seniors homes. Many individuals living at the homes did not have visitors often, and they enjoyed getting the visits. Seeing babies and small children brought joy to many of them. Maybe this is something you could look into doing @ubcpsychkid :)
  8. If it said thank-you, your doodle has been submitted, you are all good!
  9. I am not a nursing student yet, but I have a thought on it - perhaps it is because the NCLEX was just introduced to Canada. It has been big on the news in Canada lately that many Canadians are having difficulty with it. Previously, the CRNE was given. The nursing schools were teaching the curriculum on preparation for the CRNE I suppose, and now that it's the NCLEX, there has to be a transition for change. Again, just a pre-nursing student so that is only a thought!
  10. In past years, rejections have come last. They send approximately 3 rounds of offers beforehand. First, their top picks are sent out. Then, they have a certain deadline to accept the interview. If they do not accept the interview by the deadline, the next round of offers is sent out, etc. until all offers are out. Then unsuccsessful applicants are notified. At least this is how it seems to have worked - I don't represent the school and can only represent my own thoughts.
  11. Hi Everyone, Nice to see you all getting so excited about U of A Nursing. The rankings are out, and it is the third best program in the WORLD. I just applied to U of A and sent my transcripts in. I am still finishing the A & P prerequisite. I will be done in a month. Does anyone know if it's possible for me to get conditional acceptance now without that final grade being submitted, or will I have to wait? I am a little worried about applying so late in the game, since many people have already gotten accepted! I do have a high GPA, so that should count for something I'd hope :) Does anyone here know what the competitive GPA is? Thanks!
  12. People in all kinds of helping professions still have Facebook. Very little information of mine is available to the public, and I will keep it that way when I am a nurse.
  13. I think at this stage, it is important for everyone to relax. We've submitted our applications, and now the whole process is out of our control until interview time. Be confident! Set your e-mail to give a sound when an e-mail comes in so you don't have to check repetitively :) The invitations may not come out until next week, so no point in checking. You'll have a few days to accept/ decline the interview, so you don't need to get it right when it comes in. I can tell lots of people are nervous - 13 people are reading the forum as I type, and thousands of views have come up in the last little while. We will all get through it. The time will pass faster if you are not thinking about it. Remember that even if it is not a favourable result, life will continue and there will be other opportunities. That said, UBC is a great school, and studying there would be a fantastic opportunity.
  14. I like to study A&P chunk by chunk. I read a chapter, then stick to it until I am an "expert" on that system. Then, I move on to the next chapter. Eventually, you will become an expert on the entire textbook
  15. I am personally a big fan of the anatomy colouring books, but if you don't like colouring, "Essential Skeleton 4" is a great app. It goes into a lot of detail, and you can easily pick out smaller parts of the bones (down to surface markings) to look at in more detail.
  16. You are so definitely not too late! I met a guy once who was pursuing a nursing degree at 60 years old. If it is something you want to do, follow your dreams! Many people do nursing as a second degree later in life and fall in love with it.
  17. According to the admissions PowerPoint presentation, last year people were admitted with averages of 70-90%. It said that grades are weighted at 60% and supplemental at 40% for selections for interviews. That's great, because it means that your experiences really count for something. I think that this program specifically accepts people with a variety of different life experiences, and it would be amazing to be a part of that group. Cannot wait to hear about interviews and ultimately, offers of admission.
  18. "From about 500+ eligible applicants, (under review) the top 200 are invited for an interview and then the top 120 applicants are offered a seat in the School of Nursing." From the info ppt.
  19. Don't worry, they all look like that :) Half of my application is a run-on sentence full of dashes and commas now. Resist the urge to check! Congratulations on submitting
