I accepted a new position and started Monday of this week and after the first day realized that I had made a HUGE mistake and that there was no way in heck that I would ever like or be happy at this job. BUT I agreed to give it the week and by today (Friday) I am convinced that this job IS NOT FOR ME. By lunchtime today I was convinced that I did not want to come back to this job! I called my former employer on my lunch break and she agreed that I could come back to my old position (which I was at for 4 years). So, I decided to let my nurse manager know right away before I went home today. WELL, guess what? when I returned from break I was informed that she had already left for the day (mind you she is orienting me) and she never even said goodbye, have a nice weekend, or so, how was your first week? I was planning to tell her that I had mad a mistake and was relinquishing my position. Now what do I do? I have not intention of showing up on Monday morning and I have no way of getting a hold of her other than a voice mailbox in her office telling her that I am quitting and dropping my badge and parking pass in the mail! What should I do?? 2 weeks notice is ridiculous for a job that I only worked at for one week!! Is leaving a voicemail utterly tacky? I feel like she left me no other options. I don't care about a reference from this place - I have plenty of others and I would never list this employer on an application anyway. :uhoh21:

Ha Ha, maybe not - in case I have to pee for them again! Actually, when I got home from my drug test I did a "Google search" about OTC drugs and UDS and wound up on a truck driver's blog where they where talking about Sudafed - so I got myself all freaked out and of course we know that there are many crazy truck drivers on drugs (I'm kidding of course, sorry if any of you are former truck drivers!) Peace.

A new charting blooper written by a pediatrician that was attending the delivery of a preterm infant: "infant delivered via c-section with apgars of 8 and 9 with no signs of being dressed".

Well that's where the real problem lies. I have heard that taking Sudafed can produce a positive result for amphetamines - but the question is how much? I have been taking 60mg (recommended dose) at least once a day for about a week now. I'm hoping that it doesn't show up. I've never taken an illegal drug in my life!

I received an offer of employment this morning and went to HR to sign the offer. The only contingency on the offer was a urine drug screen, which I had to take immediately. The problem is that I have horrible allergies and have been battling with sinus headaches/congestion and fluid in my ears for weeks. This morning (not knowing that I would be taking a UDS), I took 25mg of Benadryl, 1000mg of Acetaminophen, and 60mg of Sudafed. I also had about 3 cups of coffee this morning . Do you think that the Sudafed will make me postive for Methamphetamines? The hospital that I am applying at uses an independent laboratory for their UDS, and I asked the tech if they needed a list of any OTC meds that I had taken lately and they said "no". Now I am very worried that I will not pass my drug screen

All of our managers are gone by 5:00 M-F, have their weekends and holidays off, and don't work any overtime. They sit in their cute little candle & potpourri-scented offices and wonder why nurse retention is at an all-time low?

Maybe it was a key to the kingdom of heaven?

I think that nurses leave the profession because they simply get burnt out. Hosptial nursing is HARD work. Not only are we having to care for very sick patients but we are having to cater to their family members as well (thank you "family-centered care"). I have to find family members food, clean clothes (yes, they do ask!), fax documents for them, etc. and keep everyone happy. This is all part of "customer service". I'm all for visiting hours are OVER - get your butt out of here so the patient can rest and get better! We are constantly short-staffed and our facility has MANDATORY overtime, which leaves us very little time with our families. I can't tell you the number of 12-hour shifts that I have worked where I get NO BREAK at all and am lucky if I have time to use the bathroom once or twice. Some people may say that is just poor time management - but really it is not - it is REALITY. Not every shift is like that - but many of them are. I go home at night and I am mentally and physically exhausted. I have been doing this for 3 years and I am already looking for an "office" nurse position.

I graduated from OCU's RN to BSN program this year and it was 4 hours per week - either in the morning or afternoon. No Saturdays.

It depends on what part of the country you live in. Where I am, new grads start out at about $18/hour. Not too great for someone with an advanced degree. Another thing to consider is that nursing is not a 9-5 job. As a new grad, you may have to work nights until you get more seniority. Also, many facilities require you to work 3, 12-hour shifts per week. That will mean being gone from your family for up to 14 hours per day. Then there is the issue of on-call, weekends, holidays. If you are considering being a nurse in a hospital, you must remember that hospitals are open 24/7.

Ahh, I too have had presentations that I would rather forget! Don't be too hard on yourself. Remember that we are always are own worst critics! You probably did better than you give yourself credit for.:icon_hug:

I work mother baby & antepartum. I recently went to the day shift after 2 years on nights. In my opinion, days are much busier. Moms have tubals during the day and baby boys have circs during the day. NST's are always done during the day. Direct admissions from doctor's offices and our clinic is done during the day. During the day we have nursing students that we must work with as well. Most staff meetings are during the day. The thing that I love most about days is that the day goes by incredibly fast!
