Long hiring process for LaCo Sheriff Dept.
For those of you La County Sheriff Dept correctional nurses, why does it take so long to go through the hiring process? I started the process in April, I took my oral interview in July( placed in band 1) and now I am going to have to wait who knows how long to hear back from the dept. I hear it can take up to 12months for them to let you know whether they are going to put you through the background investigation portion. This is bumming me out. I feel like I have to put my life on hold and pass up other potentially good jobs. Anyone out there who has a similar hiring scenario?

Home Health Salary -Hourly v.s Per Case
Hello, i'm in search of a Home Health agency and I am not sure if I should choose one that pays an hourly rate or that which pays by case. Can anyone tell me the benefits or negative of both and which you prefer?

White Memorial Hospital?
Yes, I worked at White Memorial as a new grad in the emergency room. I resigned about two months ago because I was uncomfortable with the fact that majority of their patients are spanish speaking only, and I don't speak a bit of spanish. It was very difficult to assess and communicate with the patients. It was overall a very nice hospital. The pay rate for new grads is lower than average, but ultimately in the short amount of time that I was there, I learned alot.

Dayshift vs. Nighshift
Pie, I am in the exact same boat as you. I work the night shift in the emergency room and when I get home from a horrible shift you would think that I would be able to knock out right away. Well, unfortunately I only get appx 2 hours of sleep and wake up feeling horrible. I tried Lunesta, but is doesn't work. The regular ambien does work very well, but it is not for long term use , so I am going to ask my doctor to place me on ambien cr. I'm hoping that once I get off of orientation my manager will let me go to a mid shift, otherwise I will have to find a new job.

New ER Tech
Being an ex- ER Tech and now an Emergency Room new grad nurse I can tell you for a fact, you will realize that you are doing more of the leg work and hard labor than that of the RN but you are of course getting paid less. In my ER they had me doing alllll of there work that they could get away with except transfusions, medication administration and documentation. I have to be honest, I even triaged patients from time to time, and that is a big no-no. Being a tech was a great experience and it definitely made my transition into new grad rn so much easier. I would recommend that you learn as much as possible but don't do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. The nurses and doctors really appreciated that I would do things for them without having to be asked. I was going through the process of being a firefighter but I married one, so I thought being an ER nurse was the next best thing, of course I do miss the fire. Good luck to you and think about being an ER nurse.

excelsior cpne
I also too got very nervous when taking the cpne, but here is why I believed I passed: 1. I was well prepared and that made me feel confident 2. I went on the website http://www.mindtools.com to help me with my nervousness( greatest help of all ) 3. The night before I took an Ambien so that I was assured that I would get a good nights rest 4. I thought about what I was doing before acting upon it and took my time during both the stations and pcs's Good luck to you, I hope this helped

Working in the ER pregnant
I agree Happy-ER RN, I too am going to wait until I can switch to the day shift before I start trying to get pregnant. Because I am a new grad it may take a year or so, but that is okay I am only 29yrs old.

Working in the ER pregnant
Thank you soo much for sharing your experience. I asked the question because it is most difficult for me to sleep in the day time and when I do get pregnant I am afraid that this may indeed affect my pregnancy. When the time comes I am going to change to a morning or mid-day shift.

Working in the ER pregnant
I am a new grad and will soon start working a night shift in the Emergency Room. Being that I am almost thirty I will be thinking about getting pregnant sometime toward the fall of 2006. I was wondering has anyone out there had any experience with being pregnant while working on the night shift in the ER. It may seem like an odd question, but I am a little concerned how unhealthy this may be to the growing fetus, am I crazy?

How long between interview & job offer???
I to am waiting to hear back from the ER manager that I interviewed with six days ago. The suspence is killing me. I thought the interview went exceptionally well, it lasted appx 1 1/2 and then he introduced me to the staff as the potential new grad hire. Good luck to us both

Given a job offer after interview, should I wait?
Before getting into this predicament, and I know I will, I was wondering after you have been given a job offer, is it professionally okay to ask the manager if you could get back to them in a few days with an answer? I want to wait because I have two more job interviews to go on and I want to choose the job that is most fitting for me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Successful College network users for Excelsior NC Exams?
I would have to disagree with the fact that going through Excelsior's study guides are less expensive. For each nursing concepts course they recommend that you purchase appx. 2-4 books, which if you are familiar with college textbooks, then you know are very expensive. I would highly recommend that you use the college network's study guides because they cover all the material in the content outline as the books excelsior recommends, but you will be reading less. The key to using the college network is not to sign up with them, rather get your study guides from ebay, which will save you sooooo much more money. When going on ebay type in excelsior college and all books pertaining to excelsior will come up. Good luck :)

Tech to Nurse
I was also an ER Tech and have just finished nursing school. I have choosen to completely go to another ER because I know for certain that many women and men on the staff will give me a hard time and it will be very difficult for me to transition from tech to nurse in that environment. I think change is good, I will start off with a clean slate.
