  1. I would not recommend Walden only because they do not provide much help with finding preceptors. If you can help it save yaself and go to a school that provides preceptors for u! It's been a definite headache for.me and many others with that.
  2. The program has been going ok. I actually had to sit out this semester because I couldn't find another preceptor so short of notice. I am still having a tough time finding a precept or and am looking into other options. Now that the medical school in my area started their NP programs...the area is pretty much locked with them. I encourage if you can to find a program that provides them if you can and prevent this headache.
  3. So i have had 2 preceptors willing to do it but their workplace said no. A lot of the places in my area have contracts with schools and won't take students from other schools...and depending on your np type you won't be able to precept in certain places...like I can't do the urgent care centers that are popping up everywhere. And you can only use a preceptor no.more than twice at my school so u can't use the same one for all clinicals. And then u may have to get 1 with a particular specialty which narrows it down even more.
  4. Hello fellow NP students! I am posting this because I am attending an online school that does not provide preceptors and I am so frustrated with it! I have lost 2 preceptors already and haven't even started my first clinical rotation. I have talked to other students in the same situation. I now have to go through trying to contact doc offices at the last minute because I didn't have a plan c. Anyone else enduring this frustrating process? I am regretting the fact that I chose a school like this!
  5. All i can say is that I am pretty much in the same boat. Lost 2 preceptors u had already. It's so aggravating.
  6. Hello! 2 of my preceptor's went to Walden University and they have not had trouble getting jobs in my area. I am also a Walden student currently. When I was choosing I was looking between south and walden...I ended up choosing Walden because South at the time had sooo many bad reviews. I really felt they were both along the same line where it is what u make it. The part I am having trouble with these online schools is finding your own preceptor. That would be my only reason for advising against them. It is definitely a pain in the but. I have come across some nurses who had to change their MSN type and then transfer to another school that provided preceptors...and I may be in the same boat. Have lost 2 already.
  7. Coincidentally I just lost my preceptor for the 2nd time..I thought it would be easy too but am finding that many preceptors will say they can do it but the facility won't let them. Then I also didn't realize that they can't be in a practice with a specialty. 1 other thing happening is in my area a medical college just started NP programs so now many places are under contracts to only take students from that school. I am considering changing my major at the moment and going to a schoolong that provides preceptors. Oh and also at Walden u can only use a preceptor twice and you have to do atleast 2 rotations with an NP.
  8. I attend Walden University and am in my last year (about to start clinicals). I would say it's very feasible for people working part time but if taking 2 classes it would be difficult due to the requirement of clinical hours..but there are people who have done it! South was a consideration when I was looking too but I ended up choosing Walden. There is tons of reading and weekly discussion posts. The first classes were a lot about research, evidenced based practicing etc. . After that u finally get to classes like pharmacology, pjysiology, exam skills etc. I did the RN to MSN program so this is my 3rd year and I should be done. My biggest complaint is the "finding your own preceptor" thing. If I knew how difficult finding preceptors was I would have chosen a school that provides them. It has definitely wen a stressful process for.me and I'm still not done with it!
  9. I am not aware of any NP school that you can get away with only doing work 1 day a week. Most online schools require you to do posts on 3 different days a week. Also have essays that require research, tons of reading, tests. And to make matters worse..if it's a "find your own preceptor" school...that takes time and effort on top of the school work. Then you will have clinicals...which many schools require a certain amount of hours...but keep in mind the school work doesn't stop just because you are in clinicals. My school requires 144 hours that has to be done over 10 weeks/semester So I would definitely say no to the 1 day/wk thing! Some other degrees in nursing don't require as much clinical time but it's all about what you want to do.
  10. I think it is the area because there are a lot of jobs for NPs available where I am. I am wondering though...our medical college recently got the acute care and adult Gerontology programs. .pretty soon the area will begin to follow and begin requiring the specific specialty which may make it more difficult for some NPs to find work depending on the specialty.
  11. My understanding is that so many NP schools are popping up because of a potential large shortage of doctors is anticipated in the future. In my area I don't see that a lot of nurses are in NP school but there are a lot of students in nursing school! But at the same time, nurses and NPs are retiring. In my area we have a great deal of primary/urgent care clinics popping up...but not enough staff to work them. It also seems like they don't have many patients in some areas. And now walmart's and cvs have clinics too...
  12. As of right now I am in the advanced pathophysiology class. The quizzes for this class seem to range from 25 to 40 questions so far. The only other class I had quizzes in so far was statistics which if u have 2 take that I believed they also had about 45 or so. I haven't taken the other specialization courses so not sure on them. All the quizzes, discussions etc are all worth points and your overall score will be based on how many points u have. For example a quiz is worth 30 points and u get 25 points out of 30
  13. Open book. Some are timed and some are not...which sometimes makes open book difficult
  14. If worse comes to worse and you really think it's the job and not just the facility influencing your feelings, you can see what options you have for getting a master's of nursing in another area maybe?
  15. Hi summerly! What school do you attend? I think i will graduate a round that time but I'm i terested in what school is offering that specialization course?
  16. Nursejaye! You definitely have a lot on your plate! Is transferring to a closer school an option? Or temporarily relocating closer to the school? Good luck and don't give up! Good luck.
  17. I've heard there is a fb page with preceptors but I have no idea what the link is. Also...my state has an advanced practice organization and there are preceptors on that too. Maybe you can see if your state has something similar? I also have some links that may possibly be helpful if you can send me your email.
  18. I am completing mine at Walden. A lot of reading and writing but professors are helpful and there are resources such as the writing center, where u can have your papers reviewed. There's also a resource called grammerly that checks for grammatical errors provided 2 u. I take 1 class at a time but you have the option to take 2 classes as well.
  19. I am completing my 1st year of the RN-MSN program. I am actually just crossing the hump of the BSN part and will start my graduate classes in May. I will have a break starting next week until the end of May and I am thankful! So far I have gotten an A in all classes except 1 so I am doing well! I am going to try and double up on my classes later this year in an attempt 2 speed things up. Good luck to you!
  20. Updated on carecore...they now pay by the hr...and that is around 25 to 30/hr. Which some complain about because they say the hard workers earned more money when getting paid by the case. O well! Can't please em all! These changes may be because they combined with another company and r now called evicore
  21. That's right. Sometimes during surgery the patient's blood pressure may drop and the nurse anesthetist may have to increase fluids to get it back up. It is really adjusting the rates based on what's going on with the patient at that time. Patients vitals can change very quickly during surgery.
  22. We do not use pumps in our OR either and it seems this is standard. You can look up AORN standards (Association of periOperative nursing) for info. Antibiotics are expected to be ran in within a certain time of the incision as a best practice. But in nursing school u don't get much education about the OR so I understand why you would be shocked at this. The CRNAs and Anesthesiologists take the patients history and diagnoses and make adjustments as needed.
  23. So far it has been a good experience. I did the rn - msn program so I had 2 prerequisites 2 take b4 getting into the nursing classes. So far the classes have been mostly about the issues in healthcare and using evidenced based practices. A lot of essay writing but most professors give clear instructions as to what they want u to write about PER PARAGRAPH! Let me know if u have any other questions
  24. I made like a d when I initially took it. Then I took it again and passed. Just try again!
