  1. Have you looked into school-based health clinics? I'm an RN (full time at my school) and at my school site, we have a full-time clinic staffed with NP's and PA's as well as mental health therapist, a health educator and a clinic coordinator. We all share one big area with our own offices within the clinic. I'm the only one in the clinic that works for the school district and they work for a non-profit organization but we all work together as a team. The NP's and PA's provide many services such as STI testing/treatments, blood work, long term birth control, concussion diagnosis, ADHD diagnosis and medication prescriptions, and many more services. They have even placed stitches on a couple of my students. We all help each other and work together as a team.
  2. Thank you so much Leslie. I was wondering what the school nurse job market is like? I've been checking around online and it's a lot different from where I'm currently at. Any tips, or school districts that I should check out? Also, would it be better to apply for the initial ESA now or should I wait until I'm employed in a school district in Washington?
  3. Are there any school nurse's in Washington on here? If so, can you tell me what the job market is like in or around the Seattle area? I have my BSN, RN and multiple years as a school nurse under my belt in a different state. I'm also trying to figure out the ESA thing as well, it looks like there are different levels for school nurse's. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, as long as I hold my nursing license, I will always carry my own insurance. I use NSO.
  5. I graduated with my BSN in 2013 and went straight into school nursing. I also live in Chicago, and know that many school districts are always looking for nurses!
  6. It's not at all a helpful class when it comes to IEPs. They are no longer offering the course because they were overwhelmed by how many nurses needed to take it, and that now you can only take the test to be able to do medical reviews for IEPs. I'm not sure where you can find study information, sorry! Good luck!
  7. Chamberlain grad here. Found a job within a month of taking my boards. So did my classmates.
  8. Airway, breathing, circulation

Call the primary care doctor that gave you the orders and express your concerns just as you did here.

I had a student with Prader-Willi last year and had to do the same exact thing with a 1-on-1. Very complicated case.
  11. Yep, and you get an individual educator identification number that you register with ISBE.
  12. I borrowed the book from my coworker who bought it used. I only used it once. If you feel like you will need the book, definitely buy a used older edition.
  13. Yes, everything is done online. There were 1 to 2 tests per week if I recall correctly. They were very easy- straight out of the powerpoints. They were not timed and you could save the test and re-enter it at a later time before you submitted it. There were also multiple assignments which was a lot of IEP medical review paperwork, but I don't remember what all the assignments entail off the top of my head- it's been a few months since I've completed the class.
  14. This is a state requirement for non-certified school nurses. Please look into it so you are state compliant before time runs out!
  15. Chicagoland school nurse here! I took it over the summer. I worked summer school, and didn't have any kids come down, so thats when I did my assignments. All the information is available in the power points for the weekly tests, and you can take the weekly test a total of 2 times. The weekly discussions were kind of annoying, just because it's a lot of busy work. The assignments were also long. My teacher was awesome, as long as you submitted everything on time, she would give you all the points. Some of my coworkers had an instructor that was a little more stricter with the assignments though. If you have any more questions, let me know!
