I wore my hair straight for the interview and have been at this job for 2 years and love it. This place doesn't care about hair as long as it is a natural color lol.

After a year of trying, I finally got into the OR I've been wanting to get into. I'm smiling like an idiot all the time because of so happy I am. I know that its going to be hard and accepted that it's going to take time to get use to. I wanted to know if anyone has any advise about starting in the OR?

Did the interview, got box braids and got the job.

I never wanted med/surg but that where I ended up. I'm 6 months in and got a new job in what I love. So my advise is atleast apply and see what u get

Quick question: Why did you want to do nursing in the first place?

The most I've heard about using a BSN with out work as an RN is research or right grants. It may be helpful to call a nurse recruiter at a hospital and ask for jobs that are non-nursing but need some form of higher education. Or goggle it

I'm going to be honest here. I hear the stories ppl told and still decided to do it cuz I work too damn hard. Is the Nightmares true? Yes. But it's my first year of nursing so I knew it was going to suck. My advise is to try it and see what happens.

I told myself I'd rather not work as a nurse then work med/surg. How bank account was getting low so that's were I ended up. It's not awful. Just painful. I knew I didn't like med/surg, oncology, peds, psych or in a nursing home. I never liked taking care of sick people. I love surgical aspect of nursing. They come, get fix and leave

There is a Periop 101 and some facilities use it. Others have their own but still base it on the class. My advise is to look into the program online then ask hospitals how they do their program.

I graduated with my BSN last year. I was told that I should do med/surg. Before I do OR (which is what I love). I regret it. I never liked taking care of sick ppl. I'm more of the fix them and leave type. However, I contacted the nurse manager while I was in nursing school and told them I want to work in their OR as soon as I can and kept in contact after I graduated. When I found out that they had a OR program for ppl with no OR experience, I applied and got the position. My advise is to keep in contact with nurse educator in all the hospitals and tell them you want to work in the OR and ask what would make you a candidate for hired. A large part of being in the OR is showing employer that you really want to work there and will stay for a long time.

I'm in a med/surg job but I knew even before I graduated that dealing with sick ppl wasn't for me. I love surgery. They come, you fix them then they are gone. You have to think about what you need. Nursing is hard but doing what you don't like "7-7" for 3 days is even harder

I'm having the same problem at my place. The problem would be did if they hire more nurses to lower patient ratio and higher pay. But that's money away from administration

I've interview for 2 OR programs. They are looking for someone who is passionate about the OR, someone who is confident that the OR is where they want to be. It cost alot of money to train someone in the OR (like 70,000). They want someone who can handle stress, good with technology, and a team player.

I applied to 100+. In town, 3 hours away and out of state. Hospitals, nursing homes, companies. My advice is to make a list of what you want and what you can deal with and split to everything

***update** I got the job!!! So excited. The job won't start till about 3 months which gives me enough time to rock my braids before the job happens ;D

I regret not going into the OR right away. However none of the OR would accept me as a new grad. You kinda have to go where you can, take the experiences you can and go from there.

Do u have any advice for people who don't have any operation experience to get into the OR?

I graduated nursing school wanting to be in the OR but picked floor nursing cuz people told me to get experience 1st. However I really wish that I could have just went directly into the OR. If you can get in early great then if not it's ok lol.

I know this sounds bad but I avoid management about being discriminated with. They aren't going to do much and since ur the only African American any in service about race in the work place will make obvious it's about you. I've grown up being the only black person in any situation so I've learned how to deal with this situation. ou kinda have to keep being you in order to change people's stereotypes. But if u don't feel comfortable there then fund another job but come up with a reason you want to leave when other employers asl

Well I think it interesting too see everyone's view. I think this reflects nursing as a whole. There's not that many nurses (or at least in my area) that are minorities. In my class there was only 2 black people, 3 Asians, and 2 native Americans out of a graduating class.

I won't know till they finish interviews its a program with 8 spots.

I didn't want to make this post about race lol. But I did the interview with relaxed hair ( it went sure we'll). I'm still going to get braids since I have 3 months till the job starts but by that I'd have to replace the braids anyway

My hair is relaxed. I'm not transitioning. I just want box braids. I'm ok with my relaxed hair but I'm e always want box braids. I don't have to brush it, washing will be quick and my hair is always ready to go. I'm not going back to my natural hair for a long time.

That sucks that you have to wait for an interview. My advice is to just apply everywhere. Google hospitals in your city and just apply
