When are pellgrants disbursed?
Ours are not disperssed until the add/drop mark. February 8th is the date they are credited to our account, however the school then has 14 days to "cut the check" so to speak. Generally its the friday after the add/drop date, in this years case it would be February 10th. 1st time borrowers have to wait an additional 14 days at my school Also, if you have financial aid guarantee'd, see if your business office will authorize book vouchers... Help I've fallen behind!
My mom Thursday night fell and broke her pelvis in 2 places, and also hit her head with 2 staples. She has Cerebellar Ataxia, which caused the fall. She was transported to a Level 1 Trauma center almost 3 hours away due to no ortho beds in our closes big hospital. I've been there on/off since 7pm Thursday. Wednesday my girls were sick so I missed a/p lab- practical. I'm making that up tomorrow at 8am. I missed a/p lecture on joints the same day. Tomorrow at 8, i make up the practical- which is tissue's and then have a a/p lecture exam on the sketelton, including the joints... It doesnt matter how much I study right now, it's just not being absorbed because my head is with my mom- 3 hours away. I'm praying that tomorrow she is discharged to a rehab center about 1/2 hour away....that will at least make things a bit easier, but I have to get through these 2 tests first...and again, I cant keep this info in my head. I guess, worst case- I can correct my lecture exam for 50% credit on those wrong, so even if i get a 60 I can correct it and get an 80, and the lab practical is 8% of 25% of my final a/p grade...but i didnt want to fall behind, I've tried so damn hard to ace this class.......... Sorry had to get that out Brandy

lpn rn ugh help me sort this out
Okay this might get long, so bear with me LOL I should be studying skeletal system right now but I'm having a brain cramp break.. I am taking pre/co-reqs right now at the school I originally planned on applying for the ADN program. The more I see at this school the less I like. Add to this- the fact that it has a VERY high application # and a very low acceptance- like 50%...due to limited numbers Acceptance is based on nln score, pre-req and gpa etc. typical of other schools. My gpa should be fine and my nln score should be fine, but so are 50% of the other applicants. I may not get in for next fall, if thats the case, all of my pre-co reqs will be done, and I will have a year with nothing to do- unless I take just BS classes to get through the year. There is an LPN program at a local state school, 10 months, very small classes, and my chances of getting in are very good, considering most applicants do not have any pre-reqs done. If I was to apply for next fall, I would have everything except clinicals done.. I could go the lpn route- then do the lpn-rn thing, and it will cost me the same as the bsn....but i'll be done probably a year later, as I'd like to work as an LPN for a year, and reap the rewards of tuition reimbursement..therefore costing me less... what would you do? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brandy

***A&P I Fall '05 Club -- Sept Q&A***
Stuff like that just IRRITATES ME! Who cares if it ruins the curve for them...if they had studied and applied themselves as much as you, they could have set the curve....ughhhhhh here I thought professors would be fair...huh thats what thinkin does for me! We dont have curves, but heck- being able to redo your exam for 1/2 credit makes up for that! Brandy

***A&P I Fall '05 Club -- Sept Q&A***
Okay I need to vent a little bit. We had our 1st lecture exam on Monday, got them back on Wednesday. I got a 81 on mine, but the class average was 67.89 A LOT of people got upper 50's lower 60's..... But this is the kicker....we can correct our exam, with 3-5 sentances (instead of just the answer is "B") and receive 1/2 credit. This basically mean, if you got a 60, and you correct every answer you got wrong, you will end up with an 80. So these people can raise their grade by 2 letter scores...from a D to a B. I, being that I got an 81, can only raise mine 9.5 points. From a B to an A. Now I know, an 81 is a great score, compared to these other scores. but I dont find it fair that they can go from a D to a B and I can only go up 1 letter grade.... I also wonder, if now, people will just assume that they will always be able to correct for 1/2 credit and wont study as much as they should/would if we didnt know we can do this. She did not say we could do this with every exam, but I'm going to guess some will study less. Just irritates me that I busted my butt studying to get the 81, and now people who originally had D's can have the same score as me! Brandy

I'm taking my NLN in November. Your smart to get it out of the way! I wanted to have as much a/p under my belt, and was recomended by my advisor to take it in November. My understanding is if I wait till Dec, they may not have the results in time. Good luck to you! Make sure you come back and let me know how you made out. I'll be sitting in Psych class while your taking your test.... Brandy

My A/P professor rocks!
I'll bet you a dozen we won't. What we were suppose to do on Monday- we will do this Wednesday instead. And, FYIW, the 3 professors at my school that teach a/p are not following the same information from the start, so swapping a day won't effect us at all. Ours wants us to really understand chemistry, another one skips that chapter in full, and doesnt even touch on it. Brandy

My A/P professor rocks!
Had lecture today, we were discussing the lecture exam scheduled for this Wednesday. She made a comment that she doesnt like wednesday lecture exams, perfers them on Mondays- so one of us said "well make it monday"....whooooot! She agreed! We will start tissue's this Wednesday, but will have an extra 5 days to study chapters 1-3 for our exam Monday! She certainly didnt have to..........but she did! Brandy

***A&P I Fall '05 Club -- Sept Q&A***
I noticed they didnt change- DARN it... but once i realized some of the questions were worded EXACTLY as my professor worded them...it got me thinking.... I'll compare are chapt 1-3 lecture exam wednesday to it and see if she's taken more from there.... I wonder if its different if your teacher has an access code, you know, like different material different quizes etc..??? Brandy

***A&P I Fall '05 Club -- Sept Q&A***
Make sure you use the my a& p that you get with the book online. We also are using Marieb, however our first lecture exam is chap 1-3, and its Wednesday. I spent last night going over all of the pre tests- the interactive quiz type things on each chap 1-3 on mariebmap.com I found that some of the questions on our first quiz, were part of the quiz's on this website...fancy how that works :) There is a lot of interactive stuff on there, so if your a visual learner thats great! Good luck, about time someone else said they were using marieb! Brandy

Feeling depressed about A&P, may drop out of school :(
I have to agree with the study times. I am a mom of 2 girls 8 & 9, but no spouse to help on the days/nights I have them. I do not like to study seriously when they are awake I'll read something, or flip through my flash cards but nothing that really requires my full attention. They go to bed at 830 and by 930 I'm studying my butt off. I usually study until about 1130 and then I also go to school an hour before my classes start. My girls are dropped off at school at 8am and i go to school then. I go to the library, and watch any extra credit movies, read any articles the professor has recommended etc. I have spoken to my a/p instructor at length about how to succeed in this class, and her biggest piece of advice to me was to come to her BEFORE I got behind. If something is not sinking in, I will email her and say "I'm really stuck on this". I go to the learning center in our school for extra independent help, and tutoring. We had our first lecture quiz, on which I scored a 77 with a class average of 68.5. At first I was bummed, then I learned almost everyone that scored higher than me, had already taken this class once, or had taken basic a/p. They were retaking it for any number of reasons, and being as it was on body position, and chemistry, well I dont feel so bad about my 77 score. If you feel overwhelmed, sit down with your husband, has he always been "against" you going back to school? If he's really on your side, he'd be pulling more weight with the house and the kids if you want my honest opinion. Heck, my X and i are not even together, but we changed our entire custody agreement based on what days/nights I have classes etc. Even if we are no longer together, he is behind me 100% in my desire to become a nurse. Your husband needs to be behind you as well 100% and not just when it sounds good to say it. When push comes to shove, he needs to be there to 1st- push you back to your school, and to shove himself into picking up some of what he's accustomed to you doing. Sorry if this sounds rude, but its tough enough to get through nursing school, to not have total support from your household, its going to be even tougher Brandy

Making the grade
I guess I see a "hard to get into" nursing program better than one with no wait....for one reason. It weeds out the ones who arent ready to put in the time... I too have 2 children, though mine are girls, and 8 & 9 years old. I am only taking a/p I and psych this semester for 7 credits, but will be moving up to 12 credits next sememster and 14 for the summer. Welcome to allnurses, you'll find an incredible array of information here, and everyones so kind! Brandy

A&P I: Fall '05 Anatomy & Physiology Club
Does your instructor drop the lowest? ours does, and I sure hope this 77 is the one to get dropped! Just look at it this way- you were ABOVE the class average.......to me that means more than the ## I can honestly say after seeing my score and the class average, all of the fear of a/p I had, is gone....I can ace this class Brandy

***A&P I Fall '05 Club -- Sept Q&A***
Well we had our first quiz yesterday in lecture. All of the students I spoke to were freaked about it before hand. She finally posted the scores, and the class average was 68.5, my score was 77 out of possible 100. I thought I blew it big time, but I guess I did better than I thought. I'm just glad its over! It was on body positions, and biochemistry. Brandy

Aight folks, its a course content question...HELP
Talking a/p I here. 3 professors- all at same school- all have now had the SAME amount of lectures prof #1 skimmed chapter 1, spent a lot of time on last 1/2 of chapter 2 (chemistry) and is on chapter 3 Prof #2 still on chapter 1, Prof #3, did chapter 1, is SKIPPING chapter 2, and is on chapter 3 HUH? Does this seem odd to anyone else? I have a quiz on monday for chap 1-3 but 2/3 of the other students, haven't even done chapter 2 or 3.....whats up with that/ Bandy

Reading And Note Taking
I dont find it helpful to highlight before the lecture. My professor gave us outlines for each chapter that her lecture is based from. They are available to us on line so I convert them to word, add spaces, and take my notes on her notes. There is so much in the chapter that is "extra" you have no idea what you really need until the lecture. I looked at used text books in my bookstore, and some people highlighted almost the entire chapter in some of them.....to me, its more confusing with colors everywhere...heck, after the 1st lecture, and the chem review we had, theres still a lot of stuff not "important" in that first chapter, based on notes from the professor, notes I took, and notes given during the chem review Brandy

***A&P I Fall '05 Club -- Sept Q&A***
Our testing situation is as follows.... Lecture 4- Quiz 1- Chemistry Lecture 7- Lecture Exam I :intro, Chem, Cell Lecture 11- Lecture Exam II: Tissues Leture 14- Quiz II Skeletal System Lecture 16- Lecture Exam III: Skeletal System Lecture 19- Quiz III- Muscles Lecture 22- Lecture Exam IV: Muscles Lecture 26- Quiz IV: Nervous System Lecture 31- Lecture Exam V: Nervous System As I stated before, our tests are not cumulative. Once we're done with Tissue's- we're done with Tissues etc.. I haven't spent that much time reading for a/p the past 2 days, I'm trying to get through my psych book....I attended an extra chem review so I'm okay with the chapter we're suppose to read for Lecture Monday. I'll probably read it tomorrow Brandy

I am in need of tips on good studying habits
I'm going to think straight on A/P not on general study habits. Flash Cards.......once you get your chapter outlines- they should have important things to know....use flash cards! Coloring Book........get one....when you start the bones, muscles etc. it will help (so I've heard LOL) tutoring......if your school offers it, START before you think you need it. One thing I have heard everyone including my professor say- if you get behind, your going to end up farther and farther behind...dont wait until you dont get it.... My professor offered a chemistry brush up for 1.5 hours today, it was not mandatory but she stressed the importance of it...so I went. And I'm glad I did. Very easy terms to understand it all....See if your professor has/will do this. If not, head to the "learning center/tutor" area and see if they have info on Chemisty. Here's a few things my professor offerd us for extra help....not sure where you can find them, but maybe the library at your school will have them.... I'm going to quote what she has typed on this review activities "A good knowledge of chemistry will make the entire semester make much more sense. If part 1 of this chapter is confusing to you, it will be good to do some extra work in this area......." "Check out other text books. The Essesntials of Human Anatomy and Physiology by Elaine Marieb is the text used for Basic A/P, the one semester course we offer. It has a similar but simpler chapter reviewing basic chemistry, reviewing this may help........." "Chemistry for Biology Students is a short review of basic chemistry. It's not carried by our bookstore, but is available online...." "Take in a Movie. In our library you will find Basic Chemistry for Biology Students , 29 minutes. Above all else, the one thing I need to repeat, with A/P is do not get behind. Once you do it will just continue to spiral out of control until you are so far behind you can not catch up..... Also if you have questions, post them here, we will all try to help as best we can. Brandy

School Cost
I think when I added mine up, it was somewhere near 20K. That includes all the pre-req's, the extra costs of being in the program (clinical fee's etc.) that does not include scrubs at that point etc. This year, well wait i dont want to know...its 284.00 a credit...7 this fall, 12 spring, and 14 in summer Brandy

What do you do in a group project when some people just dont "do it"
Today in my psyc class, we were split up into groups to do a short (1/2 hour) project. It probably should have taken 15 minutes and would have had we done it ourselves. my group had 8 in it. 5 of us, were working on the project, while 3 went on about the private lives they are living. Who they are dating, where they're going this weekend, etc etc etc...this was not a project we handed in or were graded on, just a "getting to know the class" project really. What bothered me is I need an A in this class. It's a co-req to the program I want to get in with tough competition. What do you do in this situation? Just keep plugging away at the work, and ignore the ones who are not working at all? do you say something to them? Whats the way I should be dealing with this. I could tell the other who were doing the work were a bit ticked like me. Thoughts? Brandy

***A&P I Fall '05 Club -- Sept Q&A***
Aight 1st week is over! I have the same professor for both lecture and lab, which seems to be like I thought, and a good thing. Lab counts for 25% of our grade so it's good that she's seeing me in both places. We found out that our tests/exams are NOT going to repeat stuff. Once we're done with the muscles, we're done...no real final exam etc. Our last exam will be on the topic we are on then. This is a GOOD THING! She seems great, very laid back, explains stuff well. She is having a chemistry open door session tomorrow and Tuesday for students to come in for 1.5 hours and have a refresher on the chemistry. She explained that its a big part of a/p so it's good to have a refresher. She's doing this for us, on our own will to go, and I think its GREAT. She gave out some really good study, organization ideas during lab which will come in very handy I'm sure. If things progress as they are after 1 lecture and 1 lab, I think I'll do okay in this class! Brandy
